Sterling won in straight games at home Friday to earn its first girls’ volleyball state title against the defending champion, River Dell.

The Silver Knights captured the first game, 25-18, before putting River Dell away, 25-17, in the second to clinch the Group 2 championship.

Cari Applegate led Sterling to the win with 10 kills. Lori Gorczynski contributed 25 assists.
Melanie Kaiser picked up 12 digs, and Emily Kriebel added seven kills.

Last season, Sterling advanced to its first Group 2 championship match before losing to River Dell.

Sterling’s season will end with only a group title. The Silver Knights will not have an opportunity to compete in the Tournament of Champions, which was canceled because of the scheduling delays that arose from Hurricane Sandy.
