The Sterling boys’ basketball team rebounded in a big way from two regular season losses to Haddonfield. The fourth-seeded Silver Knights advanced to Monday’s South Jersey Group 2 final with Friday’s stunning 62-53 win over top seed Haddonfield.
Sterling (20-9) opened the season with a 77-47 loss to Haddonfield. The Silver Knights also lost the rematch 59-43.
This time Sterling spread the court and 6-foot-5 junior Marvin Jones picked an opportune time to score a career high 23 points.
Jones hurt the Bulldogs inside. He was the recipient of many great passes and threw down several emphatic dunks.
“My teammates were finding me tonight,” Jones said.
He gave them plenty of reasons to look his way, hitting 11 of 15 from the field.
In addition, senior guard Marcus Taylor added 16 points, including eight in the second quarter.
“Even though we lost to them twice, we came in with a lot of confidence,” Taylor said.
Sterling led 46-36 entering the fourth quarter, but Haddonfield would tied the score 50-50 with 4 minutes and 18 seconds left on two Nick DePersia free throws. DePersia would score a team-high 17 points.
After he tied the score, Sterling ran off eight unanswered points, with Jones scoring seven in that span, including two dunks.
“I give Sterling tremendous credit,” said Haddonfield coach Paul Wiedeman, whose team ended 25-4. “They had a great game plan, did a great job getting it to Jones inside and they didn’t give us any second shots.”
Sterling will face the winner of Middle Township and Medford Tech in Monday’s sectional final.
