St. Joseph's U. to hold prestigious basketball tourney Sunday

WHAT:  Sunday, January 3, 2010, noon-8:00pm, VILLA, the east coast's leading urban retailer and community partner, hosts the 3rd Annual VILLA Holiday Classic, at St. Joseph's University, 5600 City Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19131-1395 - showcasing 8 of the top high school basketball teams out of Pennsylvania and New York.

The 3rd Annual VILLA Holiday Classic features the likes of Bishop Loughlin (Brooklyn, NY) Power Forward and top Villanova recruit Jayvaughn Pinkston, Strawberry Mansion Guards Khyree Wooten and D.J. Newbill, Girard College Guards Torrell Candelaria and University of Pittsburgh recruit, John Johnson; Friends' Central Forward Amile Jefferson (Top 10 Nationally ranked Sophomore) and Guard Devin Coleman; Harrisburg's Bryan Taylor; North Catholic  Guard Mike Terry; and Phelp's Damien Williams, Tyree Harris, and Jahmad Saleem.

This year's VILLA Holiday Classic is the first time #1 rated NYC high school basketball player Pinkston plays in a Philadelphia tournament of this sort. It is also one of the last tournaments for North Catholic as the school will be shutting its doors at the end of the 2009-10 school year.

Matchups are: Nationally ranked Friends' Central (Philadelphia, Pa) vs. Phelps (Malvern, Pa), NOON

PA Boys A State Champions Girard College (Philadelphia, Pa) vs. Harrisburg (Harrisburg, Pa), 2 p.m.

; PA Boys AA State Champions Imhotep Charter High School (Philadelphia, Pa) vs. Bishop Loughlin (Brooklyn, NY), 4 p.m.

North Catholic (Philadelphia, Pa) vs. Strawberry Mansion (Philadelphia, Pa), 6 p.m. .

Tickets for VILLA's 3rd Annual Holiday Classic are $10 and can be purchased at any VILLA location in Philadelphia, Harrisburg, Camden, or Wilmington.

    Girard college began as a school for orphans.
