Roman's Garner scores 1,000th point in win over St. Joe's Prep

POSTED: Sunday, February 3, 2013, 3:57 PM

Shep Garner ended the suspense in the chase for his personal milestone early. Securing an important Catholic League boys' basketball victory took a bit longer Sunday.

The junior guard scored his 1,000th point on a wing three-pointer early in the first quarter, and Roman Catholic went on to hold off visiting St. Joe's Prep, 62-58. Garner scored 14 points.

The Cahilites (15-5 overall, 10-1 Catholic) broke open a tied game in the second quarter with a 17-9 surge. Rashann London scored eight of his 21 in the period.

St. Joe's Prep (16-4, 9-2) cut the lead to three with about five seconds remaining, but missed a potentially game-tying three-pointer. Roman's Matt Simon hit a free throw at the other end to seal it.

Manny Taylor added 17 points and 12 rebounds for Roman. London went 11 for 13 from the foul line.

Notre Dame-bound Stephen Vasturia led the Prep with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Chris Clover added 14, and Miles Overton had 13.
