Northeast's Chavez has filled in admirably in goal

POSTED: Wednesday, October 31, 2012, 10:08 PM

On the roster Northeast submitted for the Public League Class AAA boys' soccer final Wednesday, there were two positions crossed off next to Jorge Chavez's name and a 'G' hastily scribbled on the page in pencil.

Chavez, a junior, began the season as a center halfback. But after a back injury to Northeast's starting goalie in a quarterfinal playoff win, Chavez took over in net. He'd been asking coach Sam Feldman for the chance for a while.

So far, so good.

Chavez delivered two straight shutouts, including a 1-0 victory over Franklin Towne Charter at Charlie Martin Memorial Stadium to win the league title.

"When I was a little kid I played [goalie], but I really didn't pay attention to it," Chavez said. "I stepped in because I had a little experience. And I mean, two games, two shutouts, two wins."
