Neumann-Goretti's Ja'Quan Newton nears 1,000 points

Ja'Quan Newton, one of the area's top junior basketball players, enters Friday night just 10 points shy of 1,000 for his career.

The Neumann-Goretti guard will guide the host Saints against Catholic League foe West Catholic at 7 p.m. If Newton reaches the mark, he will be the second Saints' player this season to hit 1,000 as senior John Davis scored his in December.

He is averaging 18.6 points per game over his last three games and is looking to bounce back from Monday's 65-62 loss at La Salle. It was Neumann-Goretti's first Catholic League loss since Feb. 16, 2008.
