Neumann-Goretti senior guard Ja'Quan Newton did not include a Philadelphia school on Wednesday morning when he listed his top six colleges.
Newton named Syracuse, UCLA, Minnesota, Miami, Texas A&M and Oregon.
"I just feel that I want to get out of the city and experience new environments," said Newton, who lives in Southwest Philadelphia.
The news was first reported by SNY.tv.
Villanova and Temple both offered Newton and the Wildcats seemed to be a favorite until they landed Maryland guard Phil Booth on Wednesday.
Newton, a 6-foot-2 point guard, capped off a terrific summer last weekend at the AAU Super Showcase in Orlando. He is a four-star recruit by ESPN and is ranked No. 67 in his class. He is widely considered the area's top senior.
Neumann-Goretti coach Carl Arrigale said he thinks Newton wants to commit before the season starts. Newton said "there's no timetable."
"I'm just going to take my visits," said Newton, who is allowed to take five official visits. "If it's one visit and I commit, I'll do that. Or I'll take all five."
Newton said he is looking to schedule visits this week.
"I'm proud of him," said Arrigale. "It gets long, it gets crazy. Anytime I've had a chance to talk with him, he sounded real good about it."
Newton said Texas A&M assistant coach Kyle Keller coached his father, Joe Newton, in junior college. And Arrigale said the school has been after him.
"He stayed true to his plan," Arrigale said. "I think he wants to commit before the season starts."
