Despite a second-half surge, the Neumann-Goretti girls’ basketball team could not complete a comeback and fell to Seton-La Salle, 58-50, in the PIAA Class AA state championship game.
It was the first loss of the season for the Saints (29-1). Their run included a Catholic League championship and a District 12 AA title.
N-G struggled shooting in the first half, going 8 for 34 from the field and 2 of 13 from three-point range. The Saints went into halftime down, 28-21. It was only the second time this season the Saints trailed heading into the locker room.
Seton-La Salle was just as quick, aggressive, and athletic as N-G and posed problems for the Saints from the start.
But the real difference was how well the Rebels (27-4) ran their half-court offense – getting timely threes from several players.
Alisha Kebbe hit a three-pointer with just under two minutes remaining in the third quarter. The huge shot got the Saints within five points. It was the first time N-G was that close since the first minute of the second quarter.
N-G held the lead only once, with five minutes, 27 seconds left in the contest, when Sianni Martin converted two free throws. The Saints only scored four more points after they took that lead.
Ella Awobajo led the Saints with 13, while Ciani Cryor added 12, and Martin netted 10.
