Florence senior Lexi Smith set the national record for career goals in high school field hockey on Friday by scoring in the first half of a game against Riverside.

Florence senior Lexi Smith set the national record for career goals in high school field hockey on Friday by scoring in the first half of a game against Riverside.

Smith scored 8 minutes, 41 seconds into the game for her 175th goal. She had been tied with Sharon Berney for the top spot in the national record book. Berney set her record of 174 in 1985, when she was known as Sharon Landau, for Rye Neck High School in Mamaroneck, N.Y.
