Some quick thinking by Dalton Carroll led to a 1-0 win for Springfield (Delaware County) against visiting Pottsgrove in a nonleague game.

Carroll, watching as the Pottsgrove goalie tried to set up the wall on a direct kick, got to the ball fast and blasted it home from 20 yards out midway through the first half.

The Cougars (4-8-2) got 15 saves from their own goalie, Ryan Rhodes.

Here are the current point ratings, through Oct. 4, for the PIAA football playoffs for District 1 teams. Included is the team record, points earned, and the average determined by dividing the points by the number of games played. It is the average that determines the season-ending placement for the playoffs.
District 1 Class AAAA
16 teams will qualify for the District 1 playoffs.

The bracket ran true to form at the Central League Singles Championships as top-seeded Tessa Lyons of Strath Haven defeated Lower Merion’s Devi Jadeja, 6-2, 6-1, for the title at the Heathplex in Springfield (Delaware County).

Third place went to Radnor’s third-seeded Lauren Bridges, who topped teammate Jasmine Merali, 7-5, 6-2, who was the fourth seed.

Eight advanced to Friday and Saturday’s District One Singles Championships at the Arthur Ashe Tennis Center.

Duke-bound Kaitlyn Kerr, who lives in Bensalem, scored all three goals for host Pennington (N.J.) in a 3-3 tie with Downingtown West.
The Whippets (9-0-1) remained unbeaten thanks to goals from Stephanie Myers, Ali Whitney and Jenn Wittick.
Madeline Romig, Emily Steiger and Meghan Toohey scored for

Phil-Mont Christian in a 3-0 win at Doane Academy (N.J.).

Priscilla Wiggins scored three goals and Aly Passanante added three assists for George School in a 7-0 win at Friends Select.

Penncrest stunned Ridley with three goals in the second half, but the Green Raiders chipped away at the lead, forced overtime, and finally beat the visiting Lions, 4-3, in a Central League game.
Sydney Mitchell, Caroline Moore and Maura Waldron scored to give Penncrest a 3-0 lead, but Julia DiiGiacomo scored for Ridley off an assist by Courtney Najmola with 5 minutes, 41 seconds left in regulation to tie the game, 3-3.
Najmola scored the last of her two goals on a penalty kick 1:22 into overtime to complete the comeback started by a goal from Annemarie Cericola.
Gabrielle Petrancuri stopped four shots for the Green Raiders and Alex Mitchell turned aside nine shots for the Lions.


Jackie Glanfield scored with 30 seconds remaining in the second of two overtime periods and gave Garnet Valley a 1-0 win over visiting Harriton.
Brianna Fecando assisted on the goal and Carly Plasha turned aside six shots. Alexa Hoffman stopped nine shots for the Rams.


Freshman goalie Krissy Walsh earned her first shutout and Michaela Whitelaw added a goal in the 67th minute to boost Strath Haven past visiting Lower Merion, 1-0.
Strath Haven (7-2-1, 5-1-1) is ranked seventh in The Inquirer’s top 10 poll and Lower Merion (7-3, 3-3) is ranked ninth in the Southeastern Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association poll.
Whitelaw scored off a pass from Jenna Frost. Katie Balmer, a junior center back, played excellent defense in front of Welsh who stopped eight shots.

It probably hasn’t happened in the annals of PIAA soccer, but brother beat brother to earn his 300th career victory yesterday.
West Chester Henderson coach Mike Lorback beat West Chester East and his brother, Todd, 1-0, in a Ches-Mont League game to reach the milestone.
Adam Matteo scored the lone goal of the game 9 minutes, 7 seconds into the first half, and Kyle Morton stopped a pair of shots to preserve the win for Lorback, who also coached at Conestoga. Pasha Ransford turned aside 19 shots for W.C. East.
Jamison McMain and Conor Malarney accounted for the goals to give West Chester Rustin a 2-0 win over host Kennett.
Eric Anderko earned the shutout in goal for the Golden Knights with three saves while Blue Demons’ goalie Greg Danchik stopped five shots.

Connor Keenan stopped seven shots for Downingtown East, but allowed visiting Downingtown West to score a goal in the second half for a 1-0 victory.
Whippets’ goalie Bob Rosato stopped five shots.

Juniors Sarah Hospodar and Meghan Drain each scored twice to lead Merion Mercy to an 8-0 Association of Catholic Academies win over Villa Joseph Marie.
Also scoring for the Golden Bears were Emily Corcoran, Carly Keating, Katrina Keating and Kellya Sucher. Merion Mercy put the game away with five second-half goals.

Kerri Crumlish scored twice for host Sacred Heart in a 4-1 win over St. Basil.
Kara Shields and Karleigh Carlin also scored.

Emily McCauley and Molly Mulhern scored two goals apiece for host Gwynedd-Mercy in a 7-0 win over Nazareth Academy.

Kelly Monoghan’s goal 10 minutes into the second half gave Radnor a 1-0 Central League win at Lower Merion. Monoghan scored off a corner from Kelly Buckley. The Red Raiders are 5-0-2 overall, 4-0-2 league.
