Sherard Cadogan, a two-time Inquirer first-team all-South Jersey defensive end from Camden Catholic has made a verbal commitment to attend the University of Wisconsin.

The 6-foot-3, 235-pund Cadogan had 12 sacks this year and 26 in the past two seasons. He is the second Camden Catholic player to commit to Wisconsin, following quarterback Joe Brennan, who decided in the summer to become a part of the Big 10 program.

Cadogan said that Brennan’s presence didn’t influence his decision.

“Not at all,” said Cadogan, who is a starter on Camden Catholic’s basketball team that is ranked No. 2 in South Jersey by The Inqurier. “It’s just icing on the cake knowing somebody going there, but I wanted to go where I would have a chance to play and also get a good education.”

Plymouth Whitemarsh recorded its second double-digit win of this year’s Jameer Nelson/Pete Nelson Scholastic Play by Play Classic basketball tourney Wednesday, dropping Academy of the New Church, 57-46, before a capacity crowd of 1,300 fans at Gwynedd-Mercy College’s Griffin Center.

The 30-team boys’ basketball showcase concluded Wednesday with six games played at two locations – three at Gwynedd-Mercy and three at North Catholic High.

The Colonials rode 6-foot-10 senior center C.J. Aiken (21 points) and pushed the pace when he sat in the second half due to foul trouble.

“What we tried to do when C.J. came out was just go faster, and it worked for enough time,” Colonials’ coach Jim Donofrio said. “What we do well is we keep attacking. You can’t drive a Ferrari through a school zone at 15 [miles per hour].”

Sophomore forward Savon Lloyd-Goodman led Academy of the New Church with 20 points.

That was the evening’s feature matchup. But the most thrilling moments on the Nelson Classic’s final day occurred in the day’s opening two games.

First, in a 3:30 p.m. start at North Catholic, Olney of
the Public League fell to Paul Robeson (N.Y.), 73-71, on a jump shot with five seconds to play by Robeson guard Darrel Lucky (24 points).

In defeat, Olney’s leading scorers were Ray Jaggon (28 points) and Jabreil McLeod (22).
