Wrestling: Barber on brink of 500

Absegami wrestling coach Gene Barber is on the brink of his 500th career victory.

Barber has a 498-133-4 record entering tonight's match against Middle Township. Barring a monumental upset, Barber will collect his 500th victory Wednesday night at home against Oakcrest.

Barber has been Absegami's coach since the 1977-78 season. He plans to retire after this season.

Absegami is 14-1 this season and No. 5 in The Inquirer Top 10.

Barber is third on South Jersey's all-time list of coaching victories. Ralph Ross Sr. is No. 1 with 601 and current Delran coach Dennis Smith is No. 2 with 542.

Paulsboro's Paul Morina has 493 victories and likely will reach the 500 mark later this season.
