Shawnee's elimination from the South Group 4 field hockey tournament Thursday following a 2-1 loss to Washington Township raises questions only someone at the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association can answer.

Why are Shawnee and Township, two of the best teams in the state, battling each other each year to get out of the section?

Eastern, arguably the best team in New Jersey, is in the same group.

If Eastern and Township meet in the group final on Nov. 10, another powerful team will have been eliminated, depriving the sport's devotees from watching it in the state group finals.
