Second-half surge lifts Furness

Furness, held scoreless in the first half, scored 22 points after intermission to surge past host Southern, 22-12, Thursday in Public League Class AAAA football.

A 13-yard touchdown scamper by Wayne Brunson put Southern ahead, 6-0, in the second quarter. That score held entering halftime thanks to otherwise solid defense on both sides.

The Falcons came out of the intermission and quickly scored twice to take the lead. Sophomore Kharee Ruley's 2-yard touchdown run was followed by senior Dayquan Means successful two-point conversion rush. Means followed that with an 18-yard touchdown catch from junior Khaaliq Shuler. This time, the roles were reversed and Ruley scored on a two-point conversion.

Brunson ran 13 yards for his second TD to cut the lead to 16-12 entering the fourth period.

In the fourth, Furness drove down to the Southern 1-yard line before Shuler scored on a quarterback sneak.

Shuler and Devin Nottis pulled down interceptions to prevent any comeback try.
