On Tuesday, a PIAA appeal board cleared senior defensive lineman Dawayne Young, who played the last three seasons at George Washington, to play football this year for Public League Class AAAA rival Martin Luther King.
Young transferred to King toward the end of the 2013-14 school year. His petition for athletic eligibility at the school was first denied by a District 12 committee (by a 15-0 vote) in May.
Of the PIAA's ruling, Washington coach Ron Cohen said, "I was hoping he was going to be able to play. We didn't want to penalize the kid. We let the state decide things."
The 6-foot-2, 280-pound Young has drawn the recruiting interest of Temple, Pittsburgh, and Rutgers, among others.
