Football: Gicking to take over at Marple Newtown

Chris Gicking has been tabbed as the new head football coach at Marple Newtown. He spent the last 13 seasons as an assistant at Conestoga.

Gicking starred at quarterback for the Tigers from 1993 to 1995, throwing for 5,897 yards and 53 touchdowns in his career. He went on to play at Villanova and Shippensburg.

"It's always been a dream of mine to come back and be the head coach at Marple Newtown," he said.

At Marple Newtown, Gicking, 36, replaces Ray Gionta, who stepped down after 11 seasons to take the top job at Sun Valley.

At Shippensburg, Gicking, who played one year in the Arena II Football League, passed for 6,365 career yards.

Under John Vogan at Conestoga, Gicking served as offensive coordinator for the last seven seasons. "He's been a great mentor and role model," Gicking said.

Gicking lives with his wife and two children in Broomall. He is a kindergarten teacher at Colwyn Elementary School in the William Penn School District.
