Louisville junior third baseman Tyler Young, a 2010 graduate of Malvern Prep, was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the seventh round (No. 218 overall) of Major League Baseball's first-year player draft.
Through 61 games this season, the 5-foot-10, 178-pounder was batting .349 (76 for 218) with 57 RBIs and 54 runs. He had 13 doubles, seven triples, four home runs, and a .528 slugging percentage.
In his senior season at Malvern Prep, Young, a slick-fielding shortstop, batted .508 with 46 runs, 38 RBIs, 20 stolen bases, 13 triples, nine homers, and seven doubles. He was an Inquirer first-team all-Southeastern Pennsylvania selection.
As a junior, he helped lead the Friars to a 22-6 record and a final No. 3 area ranking.
Young's brother, CJ, played for Coatesville. As a shortstop and leadoff man, he played a key role in the Red Raiders' 21-7 campaign.
