Cherry Hill East’s Alex Manofu was just attempting to get the ball around the goal.

Putting the goal in the net was not part of the thought process.

Yet that is what happened when the junior midfielder took a corner kick that went in the back of the net late in the second half as East scored a 1-0 win over host Haddonfield in a South Jersey Coaches Tournament girls' soccer opening round game.

“I was just trying to get it to the area where my teammates were,” Manofu said. “I never expected it to go in.”

East knocked the ball around well, with junior Dana Barth and senior Erica Hansen leading the effort. The Cougars had the better of the play in the second half, but Haddonfield provided its typically strong defensive effort.

After going 5-11 last season in coach Katie Boyle’s first season, the Cougars have shown tremendous improvement and were rewarded by participating in the Coaches Tournament, which invites the Top 16 teams in the South Jersey Soccer Coaches poll.

The Cougars have already surpassed last year’s win total, earning their sixth win with the victory over Haddonfield.
