Upset about the implication that he quit as head coach of Middle Township's football team, Lee Chappine called me on Aug. 13 to say that he was fired from the program on Aug. 5. He added that no explanation was given for his dismissal.

Neither school officials nor Chappine would say why he left the program abruptly at the time of his departure. So this reporter wrote on this blog that Chappine left the program "suddenly" on Aug. 5. He was replaced by one of his assistants, Mike Wilson, the following week.

"I was fired," Chappine said. "I would never quit on my kids. I would never resign a week before camp opened up."
