The city, wind and water - this Saturday

Take in Sister Cities Park, play and learn some science along the way this Saturday.

Friends who have taken their children the redesigned Sister Cities Park on Logan Square say it's one of the best play spots in the city. They love the little pond, and the location in an area that lacks playgrounds.

So why not take the opportunity to check out the park from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday, July 14, when the Center City District hosts a celebration of wind and water there? Children can decorate kites, craft an oar and race mini-boats.

Here is the press release from the Center City District:

Celebrate Wind and Water at Sister Cities Park
& Learn Some Fun New Things, Too!

PHILADELPHIA (July 10, 2012) – Who has seen the wind? Why is water wet? Want to know more about wind and water?

Visitors can spend time in the park's Children's Discovery Garden and play in the boat pond or in the fountain that pays tribute to Philadelphia's 10 Sister Cities. And, there will be exciting interactive workshops, hands-on activities and demonstrations that reveal the many important ways wind and water affect our everyday lives. The Milk & Honey Café will be open as will the Visitor Center. Everything you need for a good time will be in Sister Cities Park! Here's just a sampling of the programs lined up for this free Saturday event.

The Center City District will provide materials for assembling and decorating kites and will also hand out pinwheels.

Participants can help students from the Philadelphia Wooden Boat Factory craft a full-length boat oar for a 14-foot rowboat, which will be in the park that day. Plus, there will be mini-boat races!

The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University will use a model of the Schuylkill River and Delaware River watersheds to explore what happens to the water we use every day and how we can help keep the water clean.

Staff from the City's Department of Parks & Recreation will lead games played with parachutes  and host bol kite races. And the Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center will show how water wheels work and how the chemical makeup of water can be tested.

You will want to bring a camera!

Other partners for the event include the Independence Seaport Museum and the Philadelphia Water Department. Event is rain or shine. For more information, please go to www.sistercities.org.
