School transfer applications are available

If you're not happy with your Philadelphia public school, next week you get a chance to transfer your child to a different one.

Applications for the School District of Philadelphia's Voluntary Transfer Program become available Sept. 19, and if you want to apply, you should pick up your paperwork that day and return it the same day. The number of available transfer spots in better schools is limited, so applying early improves your chances.

I've also had school officials tell me it doesn't hurt to visit the school that interests you and let the principal there know you have applied.

Len Lipkin, whose blog www.phillyschoolsearch.com inspired mine, has done a wonderful job of explaining the Voluntary Transfer Program, or VTP, already. You can find his take on it here.

The School District also has its own web site on the topic.
