Lucky seven for Villanova?

The Wildcats are the No. 7-ranked team in the nation this week.

Lucky seven for Villanova?

I'm in a bit of a rush because I'm getting ready to host another Phillies game chat tonight, so I'm going to keep this short. One of the big talking points at today's local college football coaches luncheon was how Villanova will come out of its bye week at Rhode Island on Saturday. The Rams are 2-5 (0-3 CAA), but with No. 1-ranked James Madison coming to the Main Line next week, the trip to Kingston could be a trap game.

"Either you had two weeks to prepare and you did a great job and you ripped the other team, or it takes you a quarter to figure it out and you come out of the box slow," Villanova coach Andy Talley said. "Anybody in our league is really a threat, and we've been upended by Rhode Island before."

Penn also faces a trap game Saturday, as it hosts winless Columbia at Franklin Field before a really big game at Yale on Oct. 25. Despite their record, the Lions averaged 23 points per game through the first three weeks of the season before scoring only three against Lafayette last weekend.

Still, the Quakers' dominance over their New York City rivals is well known. The all-time series is 65-21-1 in Penn's favor, including an 11-game winning streak at prsent.

As Quakers coach Al Bagnoli approached the podium this afternoon, Inquirer writer Joe Juliano quipped that "it's Columbia."

Bagnoli was ready for it.

"I've heard all those snickers that it's Columbia and I'm trying to guard our team against it - now I've got the sportswriters chiming in," he said. "You're always, as a coach, worried about overlooking teams, and we've taken great pains to explain how 0-4 unfolded."
