I didn't see the end of the college women's distance medley relay, but I certainly heard it.

It was one of those classic Penn Relays roars, a "Woooooooooooooo" that rose up as Georgetown anchor Maggie Infield tried desperately to chase down Tennessee's Sarah Bowman.

Stuck outside Franklin Field trying to find the Paul Robeson track team for an interview, I immediately gave up on that and ran in to the media room to get the race result. When I saw that the Volunteers had survived, I knew that one of the biggest  storylines of this year's Relays had found its happy ending.

Bowman's tale was told by the Daily News' Frank Bertucci earlier this week, as well as by a feature-length profile of the Warrenton, Va., native in the Washington Post. She competed in three events last year - the DMR, the 4x1500 and the 4x800 - and finished second in all three. If that wasn't enough, the combined margin of difference in all three races was a mere 2.7 seconds.

So there she was this year, racing down the home stretch in the final lap of her 1600-meter anchor leg, and there was that noise again. Except this time, Bowman crossed the finish line first.

I got an interview with Bowman after Tennesee's win and talked to her about how it felt to finally win the Championship of America that eluded her last year.

That'll wrap it up from here for tonight. I'll be back bright and early in the morning, as races get started at 9 a.m.

If there's a school you root for, a race result you want to know about or a Penn Relays memory you want to share, join me Friday morning in The Paddock on the right side of the blog.
