The greatest shot in Spectrum history?

I got word late last night that Phil Anastasia was writing a piece for the package on the Spectrum closing about Christian Laettner's famous buzzer-beater against Kentucky in the 1992 NCAA Tournament.

So I started digging around to see if I could find a picture from the game in any of our archives. It took a while, but (thanks in no small part to the All-Star Game marathon) I was finally able to find one in color.

Take a look at this photo. It was taken by the Durham Herald-Sun's Chuck Liddy, but ended up in the Inquirer's archives somehow. I'm not complaining.

It's definitely of Laettner's shot - just look at the scoreboard.

You all tell me: was it the greatest shot in Spectrum history?

People always forgot how PERFECT the pass was from Grant Hill. Without that PERFECT pass, there is no shot.

What about Lamar Odom's 40 footer at the buzzer in the A10 Tourney?

I remember watching that with my brother...amazing pass, then for some reason (I never knew why) he dribbled once, before getting that shot off. Amazing (and I am a certified Duke hater)

I was lucky enough to see this game in person and I assure you that its the greatest shot in Spectrum history. Odom's shot was at the Wachovia wasnt it?

Okay, demolish the old but how about building a new SUPER SIZED Spectrum. That would be a plan with good Merit! This Philly Live project planned for the site is Urban Junk and doesn't fit this super prime location next to nearby residential homes and FDR Park. It looks like a fast buck win for owner Ed Snider and a big lost for South Philadelphia. Someone needs to save us with a solid thoughtful plan for building a new WORLD CLASS SUPER SIZED Spectrum that maintains the event only complex and incorporates and extends the Green Space of FDR Park and the wonderful South Philadelphia Row Home character. This development should be more about South Philly Life, than just adding more urban junk labeled incorrectly as "Live". Give us something that would surpass the past and bring to South Broad Street some real Class!

Greatest bball shot maybe. Best shot from any sport: J.J. Daigneault. Hometown team, Stanley Cup final.

How about Andre "The Moose" Dupont's shot that Rick MacLeish tipped by Gilles Gilbert to win the first Cup!

Considering that's considered one of the greatest shots in college basketball history, that's got to take the cake for the Spectrum.

About Jonathan Tannenwald
I fell in love with the Big 5 at first sight upon moving to Philadelphia in 2002. At various points in my journalistic career, I've covered all six of the region's Division I teams. During that time, I've eaten many soft pretzels from the Palestra's concession stands, which is how this blog got its name.

I also occasionally contribute to the Inquirer's women's basketball weblog, Women's Hoops Guru.
