As the year comes to an end, I thought it would be cool to put together all-decade teams for each of the city schools.

I have some ideas about who I think should be honored, but I want to hear from you first. Post your nominations in the comments. At the end of the week, I'll put them all together and the first set of all-city teams will be published next Monday.

It all depends on how you run this. If you go with 5-men teams -- one PG, one SG, one SF, etc. I'm not sure that you can put together an "all decade" team for Villanova that is legitimate.

For Villanova: Randy Foye, Allan Ray, Scottie Reynolds, Curtis Sumpter, and Dante Cunningham.

Dante is the only one on that list that is arguably borderline. Allan Ray and Scottie Reynolds should be LOCKS to make the list though.

I'd include Kyle Lowry...maybe drop Ray.

I sincerely hope that Lynn Greer garners attention, despite the fact that his Temple career ended early in the decade. He was a marvelous player to watch in person, with an excellent jump shot. He was one of those special players who could take over a game on his own.

    5- Dwayne Jones

    SJU
    First Team:
    Jameer Nelson
    Delonte West
    Pat Carroll
    Pat Calathes
    Ahmad Nivins

    Second Team:
    Dwayne Jones
    Rob Ferguson
    Chet Stachitas
    Tyrone Barley
    Marvin O'Connor

    Third Team
    Bill Phillips
    Carl Jones
    Garret Williamson
    Dwayne Lee
    Dave Mallon

The third team is harder to do.

My Big 5 Team would be
    Jameer Nelson
    Delonte West
    Randy Foye
    Kyle Lowry
    Dionte Christmas

All guards, but what can you do? They were the best.

Tyrone Barley would also be in the all defensive team. Don't know about any other Hawks.

I'm sure you meant this for men's basketball, but any true Drexel fan would tell you that Gabi Marginean was the best basketball player from either side to put on a Drexel uniform this decade. That being said...

Best men's players (since 2006 when I got to campus): Frank Elegar

Additionally, Chris Fouch will have to wait until 2020 when he'll be named the best Philadelphia player of that decade.

Robert Battle, Robert Battle, Robert Battle.
Battle led Drexel to their only CAA Championship appearance (and the closest the DU men have been to the NCAA's since '96.) Still having a monster pro career.
Dom Mejia and Frank Elegar, unofficial Big 5 champions/2nd closest the men have been to the NCAA tournament.
    Phil Goss.

Not that it needs saying, but Nelson and West were the best players I've personally seen at the Palestra, and Ibby Jaaber made playing Penn a rather miserable experience for 4 straight years.

Big5Fan: Lowry was a hell of a player, but you're kidding yourself if you'd drop ARay for him on a Nova All-Decade team. Over the past decade the best four-year career at Nova belonged to Scottie Reynolds. Number two was ARay.

ARay was the best of the bunch of that first big Jay Wright recruiting class.

Brainewart...I wasn't thinking career #s...but the best 5 guys to put on the floor. I like your list but someone has to give...Lowry brings a difference in defense and audacity that is once every 20-yrs.

I had too much fun doing this:

Nova - *Foye*, Ray, Scottie, Cunningham, Lowry
Temple - Christmas, *Collins*, Hawkins, Tyndale, Allen
SJU - West, *Nelson*, Calathes, Nivins, O'Connor
LaSalle - Green, *Smith*, Mbala, Barrett, Neal (if the law allows)
Penn - Zoller, *Jaaber*, Begley, Onyeke, Rosen
Drexel - Brooks, *Givens*, Mejia, Battle, Elegar

Big 5 Team - Foye, Nelson, Lowry, Cunningham, Steve Smith

Revision - I forgot about Rasual Butler. Take off Kimmani Barrett and put Butler on there. And he makes my All-Big 5 team in place of Steve Smith.

About Jonathan Tannenwald
I fell in love with the Big 5 at first sight upon moving to Philadelphia in 2002. At various points in my journalistic career, I've covered all six of the region's Division I teams. During that time, I've eaten many soft pretzels from the Palestra's concession stands, which is how this blog got its name.

I write primarily about the University of Pennsylvania and the Ivy League, but I also cover the other basketball and football teams across the city from time to time. In the spring, you'll find coverage of the Penn Relays here.

In addition to all of that, I write Philly.com's soccer blog, The Goalkeeper.
