in the late afternoon, Villanova's Elbert Maxwell won the men's long jump championship with a leap of 25 feet.

In the early highlight of Day 2 at the Penn Relays, three local schools - Pennsbury, Central Bucks East, and Central Bucks West - qualified for the Championhsip of America race in the boys' 4x800 relay, which will be Saturday at 4:20 p.m.

6:58: Central Bucks East's Jake Brophy (8:29.12) and Hatboro-Horsham's Casey Comber (8:34.68) took third and fourth, respectively in the boys' 3,000-meter championship. Cardinal O'Hara's Kevin James took seventh in 8:39.04.

6:38: Germantown Academy senior Sam Ritz managed a fourth-place showing in the boys' mile with a showing of 4:09.94. Andrew Hunter, of Virginia's Louden Valley, was first in 4:07.15.

5:40: Holy Family (Taurai Augustin, Louis Simone, Shane King, Matthew French) took fifth in the men's 4x400 CTC with a mark of 3:31.16.

5:35: Villanova's Elbert Maxwell won the men's long jump championship with a leap of 25 feet.

5:25: Official Day 2 total for the Penn Relays: 39,130. The two-day total: 61,667.

5:07: North Penn placed seventh in the girls' 4x400 meter Championship of America with a time of 3:52.06. Jamaica's Edwin Allen (3:40.41) and Vare Technical (3:42.18) place first and seventh, respectively.

3:58: La Salle's Grant Jones placed seventh n the boys' javelin with a season-best throw of 186 feet, 10 inches.

3:37: With a mark of 9:34.36, Villanova - Dusty Solis (2:57.51), Ishmael Muhammad (48.42), Josh Lampron (1:49.51), and Jordan Williamsz (3:58.94) - placed second to Oregon (9:33.86) in the men's DMR Championship of America. St. Joseph's (9:43.65) and La Salle (9:44.63) placed eighth and 10th, respectively. Penn (9:53.81) was 12th.

3:17: In the girls' 4x100 large schools, Cheltenham, with a clocking of 47.21 seconds, finished runner-up to Jamaica's St. Catherine (46.89). Pennsbury (48.06) and Norristown (48.22) were fifth and sixth, respectively.

2:05: Germantown Academy's Sam Ritz will compete in the boys' mile run championship, which is scheduled for 6:05.

1:53: In one of the events to watch this afternoon, North Penn will take part in the girls' 4x400 Championship of America at 4:20. The Penn Relays record in the event is 3:34.75, set by Jamaica's Holmwood Tech in 2001.

1:42: Stanford (17:27.54) gained a big lead early on and held off North Carolina (17:27.54) to win the women's 4x1,500 Championship of America. Princeton (18:13.98) took seventh.

1:22: Great Valley notched a fourth-place showing in the girls' 4x800 Championship of America with a clocking of 9:14.81. Next in line among area schools were Unionville (sixth, 9:19.39), North Penn (eighth, 9:21.55), and Pennsbury (9:28.88). Jamaica's Holmwood Tech won for the ninth time in 9:01.31.

1:07: Texas A&M catpures the women's 4x100 Championship of America in 43.76 seconds. The aggies were followed by Texas (44.36) and Oklahoma (45.39).

12:11: In the boys' 4x400 large school heats, Cheltenham (42.47) is fourth overall with a clocking of 42.47. Next in line among area schools are Rancocas Valley (seventh, 42.85), Downingtown East (13th, 43.63), Pennsauken (15th, 43.68), La Salle (18th, 43.77), and Council Rock North (19th, 43.78).

11:21: In a boys' 4x100 small school heat, Penncrest (Dion Durnell, Nick Reyes, Trevor Gasiorowski, Dan Fisher) placed 14th with a mark of 43.57. Jamaica's St. Jago was first in 41.30.

10:51: Friends' Central (Bailie Stovall, Inara Shell, Nyla Taliaferro, and Isabell MacFarlane) took first place in the Philadelphia Area Charter Schools girls' 4x100.

10:45: World Communications (48.94), Episcopal Academy (50.34), Southwest Leadership (51.33), and Friends' Central (51.72) were the top four finishers in the Philadelphia Area Charter Schools boys' 4x100.

10:40: In a boys' 4x100 small schools heat, Boys' Latin (44.13) and Academy Park (44.22) placed second and fourth, respectively. Archbishop Ryan was eighth in 44.76.

10:33: In the men's 400 hurdles, South Carolina's Jussi Kanervo (50.18), Pittsburgh's Desmond Palmer (51.83), and North Carolina-Wlimngton's Cody Love (52.77) were the top three finishers.

10:16: In the boys' 4x800, Pennsbury (7:54.98), Central Bucks East (7:56.36), and Central Bucks West (7:59.31) qualified for Saturday's Championehsip of America race. With Eric Kersten (2:00.44), Alek Sauer  (1:54.17), Matt Mulvaney (2:03.47), and Sam Webb (1:56.93), the Falcons placed first in their large schools heat.

9:57: It's Day 2 of the 121st running of the Penn Relays. Another brisk and windy day at Franklin Field, but at least the sun is out. Temperature is about 43 degress. Still chilly due to the winds, Stay here for updates thrroughout the day,. It's heavy on boys' and men's events on Friday.
