The University of Kentucky has been fielding varsity men's basketball teams since 1903. A lot of them have been quite good.

But until tonight, not once in all those years had a Wildcat scored 54 points in a single game.

Ladies and gentlemen, we present Jodie Meeks.

Yes, that's right. Fifty-four points in 40 minutes of basketball, scored against a Tennessee team that quite a few people would not have expected to lose at home to Kentucky given how weak the Southeastern Conference is this year.

Then again, Big Blue is in first place in the SEC East at 2-0. Could this be a sign of a Kentucky resurgence?

If nothing else, it has to put the Wildcats among the contenders to win the conference. On the flip side, it might also put Bruce Pearl's orange blazer back in the closet for fear of casting a jinx, and that would be a bad thing for all college basketball fans.

At the very least, we know Meeks' performance bumped Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade out of the lead spot on the 11 p.m. SportsCenter tonight. That alone counts for something.

Was able to watch this game until the end last night. Meeks was sensational. I thought the Vols were supposed to have a strong pressing defense this year under Pearl? They certainly have the athleticism to do so. This is at least the 2nd guy to go off against Tennessee with the first being Philly's own Dionte Christmas.

About Jonathan Tannenwald
I fell in love with the Big 5 at first sight upon moving to Philadelphia in 2002. At various points in my journalistic career, I've covered all six of the region's Division I teams. During that time, I've eaten many soft pretzels from the Palestra's concession stands, which is how this blog got its name.

I write primarily about the University of Pennsylvania and the Ivy League, but I also cover the other basketball and football teams across the city from time to time. In the spring, you'll find coverage of the Penn Relays here.

In addition to all of that, I write Philly.com's soccer blog, The Goalkeeper.
