NEW YORK - Villanova will face Marquette in the quarterfinals of the Big East Tournament after the Golden Eagles made a late surge to edge St. John's, 57-55.
Marquette held a 27-17 lead at halftime after the Red Storm made only eight of 27 field goal attempts in the first 20 minutes. But St. John's came alive in the second half, as D.J. Kennedy and in particular Justin Brownlee hit big shots that woke up the locals in Madison Square Garden.
Brownlee's back-to-back dunks gave the Red Storm their first lead of the game, 46-42 with 7:07 left in the second half. The lead changed hands a bunch of times after that. A pair of free throws by Paris Horne put St. John's up 53-52 with 2:22 remaining, but the Red Storm didn't score again until D.J. Kennedy's putback with four seconds to go.
I've been at the Garden all day and I'll be here all night offering live commentary as long as the wireless internet connection holds up. So come on in and share your thoughts on today's action.
