NEW HAVEN, Conn - For those of us who cover the Ivy League on a regular basis, this day is very special. It is the first time in nine years that the Ancient Eight's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament will be decided by a playoff game.
On one side stands Harvard. The Crimson are full of talent and athleticism, but they carry the burden of having never been to the NCAA Tournament in the Ivy League's 57-year history.
On the other side stands Princeton. The Tigers are senior-laden and steeped in tradition, but they haven't been to the Big Dance since 2004.
Both sides still remember the games played between them this season: a close Princeton win at Jadwin Gym last month, and a rout by Harvard at Lavietes Pavilion a week ago.
So the season series is all square. Today's game will award braging rights, a trip to the NCAA Tournament, and a place in the history books.
I'm pleased to say that I'm joined for this chat by Schuylkill 16 voter Jon Solomon, whose princetonbasketball.com blog is a must read for all fans of Ivy League hoops.
Now the wait is finally over. It's time to crown a champion.
