Football Crunchy Numbers

Penn State tops the opening ranking of the region's college football teams.

First of all, be sure to read the season preview stories in today's Inquirer and Daily News; you can get to them via the headlines list a bit down the page from here.

Second, I'm taking nominations for this week's Spectacle of the Week poll. My contributions are Michigan State-Cal, Alabama-Clemson (which will probably get my vote) and Tenneseee-UCLA.

If there's another game you think has a lot of buzz surrounding it, let me know by posting a comment. I'll post the poll tomorrow.

With that out of the way, here we go. These numbers are taken from Sagarin's preseason ranking. Do they seem accurate to you?

Penn State (8/30 vs. No. 180 Coastal Carolina, 12:00 p.m., Big Ten Network)

Rutgers (9/1 vs. No. 60 Fresno State, 4:00 p.m., ESPN)

Delaware (8/30 at No. 42 Maryland, 3:45 p.m., ESPNU)

Villanova (8/30 at No. 7 West Virginia, 3:30 p.m., ESPN+)

Lehigh (off)

Temple (8/29 at No. 128 Army, 7:00 p.m., ESPN Classic)

Penn (off)

Lafayette (off)

Delaware State (off)

Now for the Top 10 comparison. I didn't realize until just now that the Harris poll hasn't started yet, so this week we're going with just the AP, Coaches and Sagarin rankings.

As has been the case many times since we've done this, the Sagarin looks a lot different from the other two. I'm particularly surprised at how low Georgia is. What do you think?
