It's been out there for a few days now that the Big Ten has waded about half a millimeter into the waters of possibly adding another team.

The names I've seen batted around so far are Missouri, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Syracuse, and Notre Dame. Adding the Fighting Irish would be the holy grail, of course, especially if it would lead to a potential football championship game at Soldier Field.

The Notre Dame situation is pretty self-evident, though that won't stop some people from thinking the move is possible.

Most of the chatter (and Tweeting) I've read rank Missouri and Pittsburgh are the most likely choices. Adding the Tigers would turn the Big Ten into the Big 12 and the Big 12 into an 11-team conference (temporarily), so it wouldn't be much of a move at all.

Adding the Panthers would make sense for geographical reasons, as well as the historical rivalry with Penn State. We know that Joe Paterno would be in favor of it too. Rutgers makes sense because of its proximity to New York, and Syracuse is out there because of its size and New York alumni base - though it wouldn't really capture Manhattan television viewers either.

I've read that if it's Missouri, the Big 12 could go for a school with a strong football pedigree like TCU. That would make sense, especially because the Horned Frogs got shut out of the Big 8/Southwest Conference merger by Texas politicos' preference for Baylor.

What happens if it's one of the Big East schools? That question includes Notre Dame, which is a Big East member in all sports except football. If the conference were to remain at 16 teams for basketball, a new team would have to be added.

So far, the only school I've heard named as a potential replacement is Memphis because of its strength in basketball and history of I-A football. But I can't help wondering if Temple will be in the discussion.

Let me state right now tht I know absolutely no facts about any of this, nor do I expect to learn any soon. But from where I sit, adding the Owls would make sense. They have I-A football, and more importantly play in a big media market. The Liacouras Center is plenty big for conference basketball games, and games against Big East teams would surely draw big crowds.

I know that Villanova blocked Temple from joining the Big East the last time it could have happened. But if the Wildcats really are committed to the Big 5 - and there's no reason to doubt Jay Wright when he says so - making Temple a conference game would make scheduling the City Series round-robin a lot easier.

I also don't think Memphis would be a good fit because of geography. Tennessee is dominated by the SEC, and expanding the Big East's footprint there wouldn't change that. Granted, Memphis is closer to Philadelphia than Tampa-based South Florida. But it's only by a few miles, and the Big East has historical ties to the Sunshine State because of Miami.

Again, this is just me talking. But I'd like to think it's based on some amount of reasoning.

What do you think? Could this really happen? And should it happen? A lot of Big Ten fans think the conference shouldn't expand. It would certainly put a dent in the league's traditions, but those dollar signs on Michigan Avenue are pretty big.

Have at it.

Well the big 10 needs 12 so they can come up with 2 divisions and then a championship game like the other conferences do. Otherwise they're always hurt when it comes to the BCS rankings. So no matter who it is, get a 12th team and then a Big 10 Championship game that would get great ratings.

While it will never happen, Penn State should move to the Big East and Notre Dame to the Big Ten, again for the sake of tradition and geography.

isn't this exactly what put Temple football in the dumper to begin with....the MAC is perfect for them and so is the A10 for basketball, leave good enough alone

Temple would never join the Big East. Been there once and it didn't work. One season doesn't make Temple a strong program. Memphis would be ok, good basketball, easy to fly to. A dark horse would be Delaware stepping up there programs.

The Big 10 needs another school for football. Most Big 10 conference schools end their season before Thanksgiving. This leaves their top schools out of the limelight while the other coferences keep on playing their conference championships. I think Missouri is a likeley candidate as I can't see Pitt leaving the Big East for the basketball exposure they get. Temple to the Big 10 is a super longshot and wishful thinking.

Nova probably has a better shot of joining the Big East.

I have a feeling that the Big East would base any decision to add a replacement school on the size of the TV market and possible revenue expansion. The Big East is already in the Philadelphia media market so Temple seems unlikely. Plus, why would the same university heads who kicked Temple out, invite them back? Makes no sense. Besides, the Owls are in the right place with the MAC - unless the football program is infused with millions of dollars from the outside like UConn. I don't see that happening.

Interesting thoughts, Jonathan. For the otherwise misinformed, note that when the Big East was looking to repopulate following the ACC raids (2004?), Temple was under serious consideration. The Big East meeting minutes reflect this. So, a return to the Big East is not inconceivable, but the B10 would obviously need to grab a Big East program (or programs) for it to occur.

As others said, it didn't work when they were in the Big East football program. *shudders at the memories of being killed by Miami, VA Tech, and BC on a regular basis* But I think it would be a magnificent move in terms of basketball. Their basketball program would thrive in the Big East.. not after a couple of years of course. The recruitment process would become a lot easier, and the university, as a state university, would benefit from reaping the rewards of the cash it received. Also, their basketball court fills in PLENTY!

Pitt would never leave the Big East. Neither would Syracuse. The Big East is a far better conference than the Big 10.

Not gonna' happen Johny. Temple has defeated one above 500 team in the last several years - they add NOTHING to the television markets - and they are on thin ice with state funding. This one goes down the toilet.

Temple is fine right where it is...the football program needs to build a program that can dominate a smaller, weaker MAC conference before jumping into a bigger pond. In terms of basketball, I would rather them be a contender in the A-10 then an average to below average team in the Big East. The quality of the competition is different between UCONN and St. Joe's, the latter being more appropriate to Temple's makeup and recruiting potential.

About Jonathan Tannenwald
I fell in love with the Big 5 at first sight upon moving to Philadelphia in 2002. At various points in my journalistic career, I've covered all six of the region's Division I teams. During that time, I've eaten many soft pretzels from the Palestra's concession stands, which is how this blog got its name.

I write primarily about the University of Pennsylvania and the Ivy League, but I also cover the other basketball and football teams across the city from time to time. In the spring, you'll find coverage of the Penn Relays here.

In addition to all of that, I write Philly.com's soccer blog, The Goalkeeper.
