We move from Broad Street to Lancaster Avenue today, by way of the Roosevelt Expressway and City Avenue. With Saint Joseph's set to visit former Villanova assistant Pat Chambers' Boston University squad tonight, it's a good time to pick the top Hawks and Wildcats players from this decade.
Saint Joseph's
Jameer Nelson, guard: It would not be hard to make the case that Nelson was the best player of the decade anywhere in the city. Among his many accomplishments on Hawk Hill were leading St. Joe’s to a perfect 27-0 season and a No. 1 NCAA Tournament seed in 2004. Along the way, there were two Big 5 championships, a Sports Illustrated cover shoot, and national prominence the likes of which Hawk Hill had not seen in decades.

A few quiet days before a very busy stretch gets going with Villanova at Penn Wednesday night. Then I'll be at Georgetown-Temple on Thursday, Army-Navy on Saturday and Villanova-La Salle on Sunday.
So stay tuned.

I had a bit of extra time to put together this week's stats roundup. So in addition to the usual table, I decided to put together some of the team statistics that stand out so far this season.
I can't promise that I'm going to do this every week, but I'll try to do it a few times this season.
For each of the City Six teams, I've put together a report that highlights their good and bad traits so far. Statistics considered "good" are those in which a team ranks above 100, and statistics considered "bad" are those in which a team ranks 300 or below.
Statistics in which a team is raned in the top 10 nationally are italicized.
All numbers come from Ken Pomeroy's team pages. You can get at them via the main Pomeroy ratings page here.

It's news enough these days that Penn won a basketball game, in this case beating Lafayette 74-65 at the Palestra. And while the Leopards did not present much of a test to Penn's offense, especially in the paint, there were still two things worth noting last night.
The first is that the Quakers summoned enough defensive resolve to battle back from an eight-point deficit. It wasn't a huge deficit, and it wasn't a huge amount of defense either, but it was enough to make a difference. Let's see if Penn can do that for something closer to 40 minutes as the season goes on.
The second is that it Zack Rosen and Miles Cartwright can play together on the floor. Both players are nominally point guards, but they are also versatile enough that they can create space and opportunities for themselves off the ball. Playing both at the same time also gives Jerome Allen an element of surprise, as either player can bring the ball up the floor and set up plays.

For the third year in a row, a Big 5 team is featured in a daytime slot ESPN's 24-hour college basketball marathon. Two years ago, in the inaugural marathon, Penn and Drexel tipped off at 10 a.m. Last year, Temple played Georgetown in a 4 p.m. start.
This year, La Salle gets the 2 p.m. slot, and faces a Baylor team that is expected to be near the top of the Big 12 this season. So we will get to see how Aaric Murray and Ruben Guillandeaux fare on the big stage.
To get us warmed up, here's this week's edition of Crunchy Numbers. As was the case last season, the numbers in parentheses represent the rankings from the previous edition.
I should note that these rankings are current as of 7:15 a.m. this morning. Because there are games all day today, there may be some fluctuation over the course of the day in continuously updated rankings such as Basketball State.
It's also worth noting that beacuse so few games have been played, the RPI ratings are kind of funky. There are a lot of teams tied at various ranks, but I'm going with it anyway. You can see the full ranking of teams here.

The 2010-11 college basketball season has officially arrived. The very first game is Rhode Island at Pittsburgh in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic, tonight at 7 p.m. on ESPNU.
In honor of the occasion, I've put together a couple of items for us to talk about. The first is this season's schedule of unofficial Saturday doubleheaders involving City Six teams. We all know how lucky we are to have so many Division I programs in our region, and even more so that we can jump around from one to the other very easily.
So here's the schedule. You'll notice a couple of interesting combinations, and I'll have more to say about them below.
November 20
1a. Morgan State at La Salle, Tom Gola Arena, 3:00 p.m.
1b. Norfolk State at Saint Joseph's, Hagan Arena, 4:00 p.m.
2. Drexel at Penn, The Palestra, 7:00 p.m.
