Whatever happens to the Big East could affect the Big 5 beyond just Villanova and Temple. (Not that the Palestra will really be involved that much, but this photo has the old Big 5 banners in it.)

UPDATE: When I originally wrote this post Tuesday morning, I did not mean it to be entirely serious. It was just an idea to kick around.

But now ESPN.com's Andy Katz is reporting that the Atlantic 10 is in fact open to welcoming the Big East's Catholic contingent. As such, this idea becomes a lot more real, with the possibility of a 21-team league once Temple and Charlotte leave the A-10. I've added another potential division alignment to reflect the news.

Christian Laettner's buzzer-beating shot for Duke against Kentucky in the 1992 NCAA Tournament at the Spectrum is still one of the best-known moments in college basketball history. (File photo)

In honor of the upcoming 75th NCAA men's basketball championship, a panel of experts convened by the NCAA has selected the top players, moments and teams in tournament history.

You'll find all of the honorees below, with those featuring local ties in bold. If I missed any local connections, let me know and I'll highlight them.

And in case you're wondering how this was put together, here's the official explanation from the NCAA:

If you're a fan of the Big 5, there's a decent chance that you have a reasonably high tolerance for bad basketball.

But as legendary Associated Press writer Jack Scheuer declared to press row during Saturday night's Villanova-Penn game, the action at the Palestra was "VBH."

Very Bad Hoops.

We all know that Penn and Villanova are not at the level where either program wants to be. But it's still a Big 5 game, and it's still a Saturday night at the Palestra. So let's do this.

It is one of the signature rivalries in college sports and one of the signature days on the Philadelphia sports calendar. From the pregame march-on to the postgame singing of both schools' alma maters, Army-Navy is a tremendous spectacle.

Throughout the day, we'll have live coverage of the game and everything around it right here on the blog.

Here are some highlights from the postgame press conferences after Drexel's quite entertaining 61-59 win over Penn at the Palestra on Saturday.

You probably don't have to guess too hard as to which subject got Bruiser Flint the most animated, but I'll give you a little hint. There were 5,608 fans in the house to watch the game. That's more than double the capacity of the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
