I think that we’ve proven that both parents are important in the success of a family so, no I don’t believe in gay adoption."

This is what John McCain told the New York Times in a recent interview, portions of which were published Sunday.

This quote, ostensibly about gay adoption, also is a rather broad slap at single parents everywhere. Let's be frank: Most of those single parents are mothers. Many of them are republican.

Does it really take "both parents" for the success of a family?

And, if that's really true, do both parents have to be different genders?

Does it really take "both parents" for the success of a family? No, but it's been proven to help. Do 2 parent households raise bad kids? Yes, they do. But, a child has a much better chance in a Mom/Dad household than any other type.

Statistics show that a two parent household is the best. This is not a shot at the hard working moms out there who do it alone. Many great adults were raised by a single parent. However, the best upbringing would be by two loving parents in a stable household. As far as gender of these parents, I don't think it matters.

Lulu: Agreed but the comment is offensive as so many parents end up single, not by choice, yet do a terrific job. The more the merrier in terms of raising children. That's why I deputize friends who are great parents as honorary uncles and aunts. It may not take a village, but the more caring, concerned people in a child's life, the better.
