Here's a helpful, holiday tip that won't cost you a cent, ideal in these difficult economic times.

It will restore hours to your life and joy to your heart.

This Thanksigiving, give up the Birds.

On Turkey Day, go cold turkey on the Eagles. Say no to astonishingly bad football.

You can thank me later.

Instead, let us return to an earlier, easier, happy time.

That would be October.

Remember October?

October was swell.

Think about the our beloved Phils, our championship Phils. The phrase still manages to amaze and delight.

Remember how happy you were? Access that joy, the physical memory of yelling from happiness.

Let your frustrations go. On Thursday night, sated from too much food, you'll want to turn on the Eagles.

Don't. Fight the feeling. Extend the love, the warmth, give thanks to everything great that has brought you to this moment. Turn on White Christmas or the yule log. Read a book. Pat the dog.

When you abandon the Eagles, you'll reclaim 18 hours of your life. That would be the five remaining games in the season -- each, if history is a guide, proving more dismal than the last. You'll reclaim even more hours if you're prone to masochism, indulging in the pre-game insanity of false hope and the post-game ether of drowned faith.

You won't have to listen to Merrill Reese go through Elisabeth Kubler-Ross' five stages of grief, sometimes in a single play. You can skip directly to acceptance.

When you flip the Birds for good, you will find joy in your heart, a bounce in your step, a calm in your sleep. Give thanks to great seasons of the past, ones that contained playoffs, and relish the glory of the Phils.

Give up the Eagles, the gift that keeps on giving. It's the right thing. It's a free thing. And it will make these holidays so much brighter, happier and free of frustration. And, remember, you can always look forward to Valentine's Day.

Next year, a veritable feast of love when your championship Phils' pitchers and catchers report to spring training.

Karen, I hope this isn't your day job, cause that was just stupid and a waste of my time. I can only imagine how much time you wasted in writing that.

Dierte, she's dishing out good advice so you should take it. You're obviously a glutton for punishment if you want to waste time watching the Eagles. The only reason I'll watch (but only 15 minutes of it) is to see the fans boo louder than ever before knowing their money has been wasted. Zero Super Bowls, the gold standard indeed. At least the Sixers, Flyers, & Phillies have won Championships (and no, one measly 1960 NFL Championship doesn't count). Dierte, wise up.

Dierte - you should listen to her advice... Eagles suck and you cant get the last 8 hours of life back that you wasted watching the Eagles attempt to play the Ravens and Bengals.

Karen, I will never give up the Eagles. A fan sticks by their team through thick and thin. That's what makes the success that much more enjoyable. The negativity that oozes from these columns and the endless posts will get us nowhere.

Wondo40- The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again even though it failes each time but expecting different results when you try it again. This lady is not off base and she is more reasonable than you. I bet you were at Jonestown...HMMMM????

Ya know listening to this makes me understand that maybe Jimmy Rollins was partially right. You are the same idiots that were jumping all over the place during the run of NFC championships and the Super Bowl... but now when they look bad, you turn your back on them. I am frustrated with their play too, but still support MY team. You guys should just become Giants or Cowboy fans

did you have the same advice when the phillies weren't playing well in june?

Why should I just stop watching them because they don't win every single game, every single year? If I did that then I would be a bandwagon jumper just like you fools, dfal2510, badjake35, barney rumble me, and davekrieg...

hey - this is fair & reasonable advice. annd send your jersies back. we gotta send negative feedback, not to the team BUT TO MANAGEMENT and OWNERS who are taking advantage of us. nice job & very surprised that Dierte didnt dig it.

I hope there are some changes in the offseason, but I'm with ONEChampionshipPlease, I'm rooting for MY Birds until the last second of the season whether that's in December or January. Grow up people. It's just a game anyway. DOes happiness in your life hinge on a football game? Then you are a bunch of losers.

What makes em stink is not bad play but bad management, bad coaching, lousy play calling, and horrible picking and recruiting. Like old Lorenzo Booker...he's gained 32 yards this year on 16 carries. How much is that a yard so far? Who HAD to have this guy? i could watch these guys loose with much more enthusiasm if they were on the way up instead of on the way down.

Karen, why do I get the feeling you wrote a column just like this about the Phillies a year or two ago? I'm sure you are on and off bandwagons more than most people, yet now you can't say enough about the champion Phillies. Do me a favor...just don't write anything positive about the Eagles when they win the Super Bowl...I don't care how long it takes.

I just might flip the whole NFL this Turkeyday....what a dream schedule! First up, 0-11 Detroit vs 10-1 Tennessee, followed by 2-9 Seattle vs Stinkin' Dallas. So after two blowouts and a heaping helping of hearing about Jerry's World, we get to watch McJoke and the Fatman destruct in prime time. Trytophan overdose anyone?

So we're only supposed to like our teams when they are good? By your logic, we wouldn't have celebrated the Phillies World Series championship, because we would have "said no to astonishingly bad baseball" back when they were struggling. I know a lot of us are upset at the Eagles and their management, but very few Eagles fans are going to give up on them. And phillybob, good post by the way.
