Hillary Interview
Thomas Fitzgerald reports:
12:44 p.m.
A little whle ago, Sen. Hillary Clinton gave The Inquirer a brief interview at the Bonnet Lane Family Restaurant in Abington, but not before she shook every hand in the place.
Some quick highlights:
Clinton said that she did not find "any contradiction" between her answer to a question in last Wednesday's debate that "yes," Sen. Barack Obama is electable in the fall. She and surrogates had been telling party superdelegates, who will likely decide the nomination, that he would be a disaster against McCain.
"He can be elected, I will be elected," Clinton said. "There's a difference...Look at the electoral map: I've carried states that a Democrat must have to win. Anything is possible but I am more likely" to capture the White House against McCain.
She found irony in Obama's attacks on her veracity during his whistle-stop tour Saturday, considering that as the train rolled from Wynnewood to Harrisburg he talked about changing the "slash and burn" politics he said Clinton has perfected.
"He is doing what candidates do when they get desperate at the end of an election," said Clinton, noting that the Obama campaign has launched at attack TV ad on her health care plan and is sending mailers and making robo-calls hitting her on trade and other issues.
"He's undermining his own message," she said. "This is very reminscent of the 'old' politics."
Last weekend, Clinton downed a shot of whiskey and a beer in a bar in Crown Point, Ind., a photo-op for which Obama and pundits mocked her.
She said she is not a regular whiskey drinker but takes a shot "once in a while as a treat." As to the taste, "I don't mind it." She mentioned meeting so many older people who swear that "a shot of whiskey, a glass of wine or a bottle of beer keeps them healthy." (Sen. Clinton enjoys an occasional glass of Blue Moon, a Belgian style beer, with an orange slice in it.)
As we talked, she took bites from an egg-white omelet and two small forkfuls of French toast stuffed with cream cheese and topped with bananas and strawberries.

And one more thing I just watched the rerun of the Faith & Politics forum on CNN again and I noticed that Hillary Clinton did not have a Flag pin on does that make her UNAMERICAN?????? Please help me understand the difference EagleNation1961
For all those voters who say that Obama should leave his church I have one question. For all those people who are over the age of 55 and White and don't like him becasue of his Pastor. and think he should leave his church I would ask you when you where growing up during the 50's & 60's and going to what was know back then as (our church and their church) ever here your Pastor or Members say anything nasty or rasict against those who were fighting for equal right in this Country during thoses times and if so have you left you Church are you still there? And if so what gives you the right to tell someone else how and who they should worship with. Just a question. EagleNation1961
Hillary is a scary person. Here's why. Anyone who can shamelessly claim that Obama is ''desperate'' when he is clearly ahead is as delusional as GWB. I would have a lot of sleepless nights wondering which of her many personalities she's in. She is unbelievable....pun intended. Obama08! Lagirl
You know I only want one thing to happen right nowand thats training camp it's time for some Football Go E.A.G.L.E.S 08 EagleNation1961
Dmoran You are right but were does it say that Hillary has the ability I'm not saying that she can't do it I'm just saying that what we need is someone who will change they way Washington works. Do you fell Washington is working for you?????? If they are talking about real issue like Out sourcing of jobs and people losing there jobs while Washington lends a helping hand to Bear Stearns then I'm all for that but all of this crap about Rev Wright , Peter Paul and everything really does not put food on my table or help me pay my bills. So if we are talking about things that truly matter then I'm all for it. But you know he realyy could go really negative on her but he chooses not to. And Guess what it seems like the Politics of Hate to me righht now in 2008 I could be wrong but I don't think so. EagleNation1961
To EagleNation1961, I will tell you how the Republicans gained control of Congress during the Clinton years. It was the politics of hate. The attack machine went on nonstop during the Clinton years, but you are blaming the wrong people for that machine. Unless you are also willing to blame Obama for any personal attacks that come his way, you need to realize that it is not the recipient of the attacks who is always the problem. In fact, Bill Clinton had high popularity ratings through much of his presidency, and was easily reelected. But, his policies were anathema to the religious right. Obama has pretty much the same policies, and already, he is proving to not be immune to the attack machine. It was not Hillary Clinton, but the right that initially brought the Reverend Wright issue into the campaign and the false rumors that Obama is a Muslim. John Kerry is an excellent politician and war hero, who was portrayed as a traitor in 2004, while Bush, who avoided the draft, was held up as a hero by the right. In addition, he was defeated by the introduction of anti gay-marriage propositions in swing states, designed to attract turnout from the right. These are powerful forces, and Hillary Clinton is absolutely right to point out that a politician needs to be able to function well under these circumstances. dmoran

The reason Hillary Clinton is more likely to win against McCain is because sooner or later, issues will be discussed, and unless he changes his current stance as I have read in articles, Obama has a couple positions which could very well scare current moderate supporters into supporting McCain instead. One is his relative inexperience in military affairs. But also, his energy position is particularly troubling in that it does not include serious domestic oil production in addition to the excellent ideas about promoting conservation and alternative energy. This is an area in which he differs from Hillary Clinton. Energy professionals say we are on a collision course with world oil shortage as current reserves come under strain from the increasing demand of the huge populations in China and India. We already import 11 million barrels of oil a day. Not increasing production now will cause prices to rise further and are in danger of creating a worldwide economic disaster in the coming decades. This has nothing to do with encouraging Americans to use more oil. On the contrary, this should be done in addition to reducing our own demand. While energy professionals are not thrilled with Hillary Clinton's desire to increase taxes on energy companies, they do praise her understanding of energy issues and her realization that a multifaceted approach is absolutely necessary. Today, a new article appeared in the NYTimes about the problems of oil supply. It can be found at: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/20/weekinreview/20mouawad.html?ex=1209355200&en=004f68ff2f7b1db7&ei=5070 Obama's and Clinton's energy positions: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/politics/5546810.html dmoran

I am from Buffalo, NY, been living in AZ for 4 yrs, had to go where the job is with my spouse. I know what it is to loose a job for no reason of your own, I have no doubt Obama is a good person with intentions, I am afraid of what those intentions bring with them. Fear of the unknown, I know all that. I have been around for quite a while and seen alot in my time. I am not afraid of change, we need that, I am not even sure Hillary can deliver enough of what this country needs and McCain seems like a good man but again, 4 more years????? Come on, anyone can see it is not working. We need someone strong, smart, aware, I am not sure any one of the 3 possible candidates can deliver. They sure can deliver promises and paint really pretty hopeful pictures but it is going to take more than words to change things and move forward from where we are starting from. march010101
"I have no hate in me, just fear." Just what Clinton's counting on. SteveMG
Hi jfnikki Do you have anything on Hillary these are getting OLD EagleNation1961
March010101 That is awesome now go outside your neighborhood and ask other people how she's helped them That the true measure of a Politicans that works for the people not everyone is as lucky as you and yours remeber their are a lot of people in this country that don't have the same luck as you. God Bless you and your together we can all get it done. EagleNation1961
Ok March10101 that works for me now we can talk on a normal level. I have fear as well but I look at it like this do want the same old same old or do we want a Goverment that provides for the people whenyou say Hillary is best for America I want you to think about real america not this fake image that's played out in the media. I know there are people in your Neighborhood who are going through tough times or they know someone who is. Or you can come to New York and asks those real people who are looking for jobs what she's done for them. I know Hillary is a good person but she's part of the Old way of doing politocs and we need a new direction for the coumtry to really get things done. So go out and ask people not of your circle like I have and see what they are going through then ask yurself were real change will come from. With Real Love Eaglenation1961 EagleNation1961
My grandsons and my daughter in NY had medical coverage because of Hillary! For that I am loyal to her. My daughter is a single Mom with 2 sons and when she got sick with a stroke she had medical coverage she could not afford on her own as a result of Hillary's fight. So yes, Hillary did do something for me and my family! That is what she did for me! march010101

Hillary's record with Blue Collar workers in New York. Jobs promised to bring to the state 100,000 jobs lost while she has been in the Senate over 30,000 to jobs needed to keep her Promise when elected 130,000 still waiting in New York EagleNation1961- Takes one to know one, right? I am going to volunteer every spare minute of time I have over the next two days to get out the vote for Obama. Hillary's gotta go! PA Voter

His wife is out on the campaign helping him just like Bill is helping Hillary. And once again Rev wright is not setting policy in this election he is a none issue as far as I'm concern. I don't live my life thinking what he can do for me or you for that matter. My company just laid of 8000 workers and sent my job to India so don't talk to me about stuff that dooes not pay my bills or put food on the table. Hillary did nothing for the peole of New York and she will do nothing for you or me. EagleNation1961
No it is not "enough said". Where is Hillary's opponent keeping his wife??? With his Reverend???? Out sight and ear shot so we can not see or hear them talk about how they "hate" America???? march010101
Yes, just imagine a Clinton Administration! Atleast we know she will be there for OUR country!!! And OUR People!!!! Even the smallest of doubt is enough to dismiss her opponent! I do not even want his name on my lips! march010101
She can not even maintain or control her own Campaign how is she going to control the country? Enough said EagleNation1961
Everyone who is posting on this site for HILLARY Clinton are typical of her spin. You want us to forget the past. Everyone says the 90's were great Then how did the Republicans gain control of the House & senate in the 2000 election besides stealing it well let's see. The Dot.com bust which lost thousands of Jobs the pending economic crisises all of the scandals surrounding Bill & Hillary Clinton. Do you think the Rebuplicans have forgotten about White Water & Monica, Peter Paul Columbia , NAFTA youn think what they have on Obama it's even worse for the Clintons. EagleNation1961
BTW PHAZED, you might want to take a look at Wright's biography. There's more to him than "God damn America" SteveMG
Imagine a Clinton administration. Just like her campaign, where loyalty trumps competence (like this administration). The extreme she went to show her CinC cred will force her to let the generals walk all over her. She won't be able to afford to look weak on defense, and if the generals complain, she'll be afraid of exactly that. For the sme reason she won't try to restore the honor and reputation of the USA as a force for decency and human rights. If you think she'll restore the integrity of the DOJ, just remember that with her negatives, she'll have no coattails and be left with a thin majority, which she will most certainly lose in 2010. Therefore, she will have to keep in place the executive abuses of George W. Bush to defend herself against the inevitable "political" investigations. The fact that she is playing Karl Rove politics should by itself be a red flag that she can't govern. SteveMG

I beg to disagree with Hillary on this. She is the one getting desperate because she is loosing Smart- FACT IS O'BAMA IS UNELECTABLE. His pastor "one of the most important people in my life" would destroy this country if he could. Very nice...just who I would want counseling my President. Fact...THE MAJORITY OF PRIMARIES O"BAMA WON WERE IN "RED STATES" WHICH HE WILL NOT CARRY IN THE FALL. The traditional "BLUE" States have been won by Hillary as well as the vital swing states of Florida, Ohio, Cailfornia, & Michigan. O'bama can't win those states now and won't win them later. If you want a Republican in the White House next January vote for O'bama. If you are a ture Democrat and want to regain the Presidency vote for Hillary. She is the only Democrat that can win it all. PHAZED
Billary is the liar and the phony, not Barack. S.J.
To those of you who believe Hillary when she says she has been fully vetted, see “Hillary’s Felony Misspeaking Never Challenged By The Media” article and video: http://www.peterfpaul.com/ Trial to come up Thursday, April 24 in CA. Kristin
Around the world the Clinton name represents much of what is wrong with American politics. The only other political name which comes close for political odium is George W Bush. Barack Obama offers a new direction and ethical, professional administration. Something long overdue. On Tuesday Pennsylvania has a chance to put America back to work. If you want to feel proud of your country again - want to bring the troops home, and want to elect an administration that will deliver for the people of PA and all Americans, then Barack is your man. He is, as you Americans say "The real deal". Why do you think the people all around the world who support him wouldn't have a bar of the Clinton / Bush way of doing business. Go PA & Go Obama! Show America the way. John Hay - Australia JohnHay
OBAMA is desparate, and passive-aggressive. TWO SEPARATE SPEECHES IN NC, at the same point when he says "Senator Clinton in her element", he gives her the finger. Note: the people in the background are different. www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoOFp-RDpvM www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zhkq11UExcw stev
Here are several reasons that Obama will not be elected! http://www.jeffhead.com/obamacircle.htm Christines
Obama uses JAY-Z rapper in his speeches. So becoming. Wait and America will wake up but it is too late. All the stuff about Obama is staring you in the face but there is one excuse after another after another. The biggest liar in this campaign is OBAMA. We know Hillary. http://youtube.com/watch?v=ionFwC1UUUw stev
RetOff, Your comments are flat out wrong. Get your facts straight. Put up a legitimate article (i.e. not one you wrote) showing that 50% of Barack's donors give $1000 or more. I give what I can. Sorry you are so clueless about the facts. GoHuskies08
Its not easy to judge obama by his political past, because he doesnt have much of one. His voting recorded in the senate is a paltry 62%; and he is ranked 99th in seriority. We are to take him at his word that he is qualified and he knows what he is doing. Vote for him if you beleive him. tdoc
I see someone say, "Obama you are destroying the party". Apparently that poster doesn't remember the last President that got impeached, Bill Clinton. If IMPEACHMENT doesn't destroy a party I don't know what does. Bill was having sex with Monica Lewinsky downstairs at the White House, while Hillary was upstairs. How ugly. Then he went ahead to lie about it on TV, then lied under oath. He must have promised her that he would win the Presidency for her in the future in his plea for forgiveness. Truth is something the Clintons deny. Go Obama mgrfin
Hillary was desperate in Ohio, she had some diplomatic cohorts in Canada to manufacture a story about a Obama surrogate regarding NAFTA; it turns out that the surrogate was from Clinton's campain, and he had told the Canadian diploomats that the NAFTA rhetoric from Clinton was harmless. I didn't see any intense media scrutiny for that mix up; considering she and the media scrutinized Obama for what supposed to had happen, but didn't. drbinc
If Hillary wins the nomination, the Republicans will ask one simple question in the General Election: Which would you prefer...a war hero OR the spouse of an "IMPEACHED?" President. And it will be all over for us democrats. Vote OBAMA! SonnyJames
RetOFF2005, You sound BITTER, Clinton LIED about Bosnia, not just once but many times, and when she was CAUGHT, she recanted. Her white house papers proved that she supported NAFTA under Prez Clinton. If she was going to a Dangerous zone (Bosnia) why would she RISK HER TEENAGE DAUGHTER'S LIFE--She should have been referred to Child protective services. You sound like an angry person. Obama was raised by a single parent, on WELFARE, and lived with his grandparents in Hawaii. He made 4 million with book sales and just paid off his student loans, Clinton with her 109 Million bankroll, and much of the money from giving speeches for supporters of trade deals which are taking jobs from americans. If you want to point fingers, remember there are 4 pointing back at you. Ironically, Clinton and Obama's policies are 95% the same, so how is his so much worse than her's. Get real, read, research and Please get informed before you post all this hatred, it only hurts your candidate, because with every NEGATIVE, MISLEADING THING THAT IS SAID ABOUT OBAMA, IT MAKES HIS SUPPORTERS THAT MUCH MORE DETERMINED TO CHANGE THE OLD POLITICS AND LOOK FOR SOMETHING NEW. I WAS A CLINTON SUPPORTER, UNTIL SHE STARTED WITH ALL THE LIES AND "MISSPEAKS" APOLOGY IS OK FOR HER BUT NOT OBAMA, GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!!! smcclair
@RetOff2005 Your "facts" are wrong. 90+% of his donations are of $100 or less. And don't you think that by spending money now on his campaign, he has an opportunity to do exponentially more good than $50M can bring once he becomes President? Zeb
RetOFF2005, Obama is getting his money for voter like ME that will donate what and when I can to support CHANGE in this country. Did you ask Senator Clinton to donate her campaign money? What's good for him should be good for her, however, it's clear that YOU are part of Clinton's negative mudslinging campaign and instead of you giving to Clinton, why don't you donate it to a favorite charity??? CNN stated that there were 1.5million middle class donating an average of less than $100, so if you wish to post, please get you FACTS right. smcclair
ohwow23: Pennsylvania wake up. Sen. Clinton apologized many times for her mistake in the Bosnia comments. Has Sen. Obama apologized for anything? No! Enough of Bosnia. As a former Commander, I know that I would have briefed Sen. Clinton about snipers if she visited my site when in Bosnia. Remember, she has not taken a vacation like the Senator from Illinois. Obama’s millions in donations has allowed to lie about the year he was born, he lie about not going to private schools as a child, he lied about his NAFTA/Iraq comments, look at the truth. Remember, he does not speak like someone that came from the ghettos. He does not take monies from lobbyist but only lobbyist employees. What! Remember he has voted as Sen. Clinton the same since being a U.S. Senator. He has attached his name to bills because he has only been running for presient since becomeing a U.S. Senator. He speaks as the privileged person that he came from. You must be one of the rich Americans that can afford Obama. Forget elitism. Obama's character is questionable. Bush comes to mind. I guess Pennsylvania is used to arrogant Presidents. Another 4-8 years of Obama will be the same. Look at his tax plan. Look at his retirement plan. Look at his associations. Then look at yourself. Remember, those of us that voted for Sen. Clinton will vote for Sen. McCain. It is all about what is best for America and not rich Americans. RetOff2005
Some go to New York and asks all of the blue collar Workers she promise to bring jobs to when she ran for the Senate? i think her words were I will bring 100,000 new jobs to the state of New york instead they have a net decrease of over 30,000 jobs being lost that means she willhae to bring 130,000 new jobs to New York. False promise saying what you think you need to hear is what she does best. EagleNation1961
So I guess we are to assume that Hillary is funding her own campaign please people pick a subject with some real substance. Where is her money coming from? EagleNation1961
You have got to be kidding me. This is becoming silly hillary saying that Obama is desperate WOW. I must have missed something over the last 8 weeks. I would hope that after Tuesday she stops with all the crap.I was going o vote for her at one point during this campaign but I can't seem to find it in me now. The Clintons have over stepped there bounds with this thing. They use to be loved by many now they have turned what once was aGreat Legacy into a joke. I.m not as stupid as people think being a Blue collar woeker I can think for my self and my mind is made up. Im switching from Clinton to Obama EagleNation1961
Zeb do you think Obama would have had this lead if what you know today was told 18 months ago? Why was the truth hidden for all that time? As for Pennsylvania, can you turn on your TV without seeing an Obama Ad? Wonder where he is getting all his monies? Also, middle class and retirees, please look at his tax plan and capital gains plans. Can you affort to pay more. Enough about a great speaker. Actions talk for themselves. RetOff2005
The only person in this race who is a phoney is the one who ducked sniper fire in Bosnia....... ohwow23
It truly is amazing seeing Sen. Barak Obama spend million after million on political ads. Instead he could help millions of poor Americans with the same monies. Especially since Obama has made it clear that he has the ability to raise an unlimited amount of monies. Can you imagine what the monies he collected last month (i.e., $50,000,000) alone would have helped poor Pennsylvania’s? Month after month Obama spends on ads versus helping one person other than himself. If Obama would spend 1/3 of his donations to help Americans, this would be a better proof in showing that he is willing to help Americans (i.e., he cares about Pennsylvania and America). Am I the only American worried about where Obama is getting all his donations? CNN proved that 50% were $1,000 donors and as an average working person, I cannot afford to be so generous. Can you? RetOff2005
Obama is a PHONEY, Quit already/You are destroying the party. cj410
So on one blog we have Mr. Eichel giving a very downtrodden view of Senator Obama's campaign, and here we have T. Fitzgerald talking about how Senator Clinton shook every hand in the place. How about the fact that there is virtually no way that Sen. Clinton can achieve the upper hand in pledged delegates? How does that square with Sen. Clinton's claim that she "will" be elected. I guess that's not part of objective journalism. What's fair is fair. GoHuskies08
Meglomania setting in? This is getting worse and worse. Please PA, let's stop "Put McCain in the White HOuse" movement, but putting a stop to Hillary. She's destroying the party and any chance of taking control from the GOP, Disgusted
How can Obama be desperate when he has a wide national lead and Clinton is running out of time to make a comeback? It's rather dismissive and divisive of her to say that half of the Democrat's base don't matter. Her whole "kitchen sink strategy" and the idiocy of "bittergate" reeks of desperation on her part, not his. Zeb
BILLARY IS A PARIAH. Quit already/. You are destroying the party. S.J.
