PA Primary team reports:

10 p.m.
So who won? We blog, you decide.
But...Obama was frequently tentative. Hillary, not so much.

9:40 p.m.
Gas prices at $4 a gallon?
Hillary has an answer. Investigation. “There is market manipulation.” And she has an energy plan.
Obama returns to his theme: people are cynical because the nation has been talking about energy independence for decades, with nothing happening. He proposes an energy “Manhattan Project.”

9:33 p.m.
Gibson asks if they are being hypocrites by having pro-gun control records, but spending the Pennsylvania campaign hanging with hunters.
Clinton again invokes Bill – on police officers and the assault weapons ban. (She’ll bring it back.) “I respect the Second Amendment...but most lawful gun owners…want to be sure we keep those guns out of the wrong hands.”
Obama is again less certain, and rambles a bit when asked about the Washington D.C. gun ban. Gibson asks him to deny that he advocated a complete ban on hand guns in 1996. Obama says no. But whatever the truth, no other answer is possible.
Does Clinton support the D.C. ban on hand guns? She favors “what works in New York.” Says there should be local control on guns. Which opens the door to the rules in Montana as well as D.C.

9:18 p.m.
Obama says he would consider having people making more than $97,000 pay Social Security taxes on the higher income.
Clinton invokes Bill's economy again.
Clinton appears more assured than Obama. The problem with debating the details of economic policy, or any policy, for that matter, is the actual details can't be known until the Congressional sausage making machine kicks in. Or off.

9:15 p.m.
After an hour they move onto domestic issues…taxes, housing.
A debate over capital gains taxes. Would Obama raise the rate? Pretty much. With a 15 percent rate, billionaires  “are paying a lower tax rate than their secretaries. That’s not fair.”
Clinton invokes the economy under Bill. “We’ve lost that.”
“Good union jobs,” is her goal, she says. No mention that union ranks have been shrinking for decades. She praises Gov. Rendell. Camera cuts to him. He is slumped in his chair, but watching intently.
As for the tax:  “I wouldn’t raise it above the 20 percent if I raised it at all.”

9:03 p.m.
Clinton sounds more assured on a Middle East policy question - should it be us policy to treat an Iranian nuclear attack on Israel as an attack on US?
“I’d try and stop them from getting weapons,” he said. “I will take no options off the table…it is very important than Iran understands an attack on Israel is an attack on our strongest ally in the region…that would be an act of aggression”
Clinton is blunter. “An attack on Israel would incur massive retaliation from the United state” but she would include Iranian attacks on other allied countries in the region, too.

8:54 p.m.
To Clinton – if the military told you that pulling out of Iraq would give back all of the gains, would you still pull out?
“Yes”
“So we can begin with withdraw within 60 says…in a careful…manner” Loophole?
No one can predict what will happen, she says, when American troops leave.

8:40 p.m.
Then Obama tries to take the high ground. Why are we “obsessed” with his comments and Clinton’s Bosnia account. Just mistakes, pretty irrelevant. How about changing the culture of Washington D.C.?
But the issues Obama complains about keep coming.
Why doesn’t Obama wear a flag pin. He tries to rise above it.
"There is no other country where my story is even possible.”
He decries "manufactured issues." Like a former member of the Weather Underground who he knew in Chicago. These are the issues the GOP are expected to use against him.
"This kind of game, in which anyone I know, regardless of how flimsy the relation is..American people are smarter than that."
One test will come April 22.
And Clinton tests it now. Says Obama served on a board with the man. "Certainly, the Republicans will be raising" the issue.
"I have a lot of baggage, and people have rummaged through it for years."
ABC and Clinton may be doing Obama a favor. Giving him a chance to address and, perhaps, knock down these issues, and on Tuesday see whether it work.

8:32 p.m.
Clinton goes nuclear. Or at least deploys the blockbuster bomb in her suitcase.
First, Obama is asked what will you do when the GOP plays those sermons on TV again and again
“If not this, it would be something else.”
“I have confidence in the American people..when they see my track record, the work that I have done, I have absolute confidence they can rally behind my campaign.”
Clinton demurs. And opens the suitcase. “It is something that deserves further exploration…as leaders we have a choice who we associate with." Like, she says, Farrakhan and "giving the church bulletin over to…Hamas.”

8:21 p.m.
"Charlie” Gibson for some reason starts off with a totally irrelevant issue – the vice-presidency. Who cares at this point?
Then he goes right for it. You were patronizing, Gibson asks. And didn’t you say actually what you meant?
Obama’s answer is awkward. Not a clean hit. He talks about people clinging to religion, which sounds a bit like what he said in San Francisco.
Can Obama beat McCain Clinton is asked?  “We’re going to have a Democratic president. It’s either going to be Barack or me.”
Asked a second time, she says, “Yes, yes, yes.” Takes a punch for the party. Though she allows she’d be better. They both agree they themselves are best candidate.
Obama comes back to the elitist etc. He talks about his own faith, and Illinois gun owners. He is now a lot more comfortable.
“You take one (mangled) statement…and beat it to death….Its not helping that person at the kitchen table.”
“She’s adopting the same tactics” as the GOP has used. “They are frustrated and angry be cause this is what passes for our politics.”
(It would be fascinating to see their internal polling on the issue.)

8:06 p.m.
Clinton notes the historic nature of their appearance. Neither she, a woman, or Obama, black, would have been allowed to participate in the deliberations at Independence Hall in 1776.

8:02 p.m.
Seconds into the debate raises the "bitter" issue himself, but instead calls it "frustration." Will it inoculate himself against Clinton.

7:45 p.m.
The small audience is already in the National Constitution Center. The debate is being billed by ABC as the "Prime-Time Showdown." Not quite the OK Corral, we trust. It will be moderated by ABC's Charles Gibson and George Stephanopoulos.

pre-show bets: sen. clinton will give backhanded complements while insinuating sen. obama is an 'elitist'. sen. obama will take to long to get point (message) across on questions. in the end sen. obama will not lose anything and sen. clinton's gain will be negligible by next week this time.

Obama campaign advisor David Axlerod today acknowledged that the Obama campaign knew Wright was going to be a problem from the get-go and it's why Wright dis-invited to Obama's launch of his presidential campaign. the Obama campaign had a sense that Wright's sharp tongue might spell trouble for the Illinois senator. (For a sermon sample, click on the Read more line below.) That was the word anyway Sunday from Obama’s chief strategist, David Axelrod, who acknowledged during a conference call with reporters that Wright was disinvited from Obama's official candidacy announcement on Feb. 10, 2007, in the shadow of the Old State Capitol in Springfield, Ill. Wright had been expected to lead an invocation of some kind, but never appeared. “There was no doubt that there was controversy surrounding him,” Axelrod said Sunday. “And we didn’t want to expose him … [or] make him the target and a distraction on a day when Sen. Obama was going to announce his candidacy.” The Obama campaign first said the weather prevented Wright's appearance. Today's statement by Axelrod shows that wasn't true. They were trying to hide him. While I don't believe Obama subscribes to Wright's views and I believe his heart is in the right place and he wants what's best for the country, I think we've just seen another case of his poor judgment and his tendency to put blinders on when when it comes to his loyalty to his friends and his choice of associates. If Obama is elected President, we'll be relying on his judgment in choosing high level advisors and policy makers. His track record with Rezko and Wright, particularly his insistence he saw no red flags, gives me pause. Obama seems less about hope and change and more about inexperience and naivite. I'll take a gamble if Obama's the nominee, for sure. Anything but another 4 years of Republican rule But he isn't the nominee yet. And we have a much less risky option at hand in Hillary.

Now I remember why I stopped watching ABC a few years ago, this sounded like an episode of "What questions could we ask to get the Demos to insult each other and otherwise embarass them?" Can Hillary stop syaing that she has taken all the hits and survived when we know they are just drooling to dredge them all up and have had 8 years to bring up some new embarassments. Obama is beating her despite all the years of favors owed by the party hacks to the Clintons and Obama has never said the words "Whitewater, travelgate, lost files, library donations..." and now that we know that Hillary likes to shoot, they can bring up the Vince Foster question again. I'm not sure how she got this far without anyone asking her why she never apologized to all the women used by her husband who she attacked as liars when we now know they were the ones telling the truth.

For those in PA that do not man that Obama's church selected as their Man of the Year that was talked about, Louis Farrakhan http://youtube.com/watch?v=PWxNeGOXSoA This is a man that Obama's tight knit church of 20 years believes is a man of greatness, do you, does he? Are you ready to send in tax dollars to pay for the reparations Farrakhan says blacks deserve?

Letting the bush tax cuts expire equals the biggest tax increase in the history of this country, and people making as little as 30 grand a year will have thier taxes raised. THAT IS A FACT AND IT IS INDISPUTABLE. Expiring tax cuts mean a tax increase.

These questions were terrible. I don't understand Mr. Gibson and Mr. Stephanopolous's questions. We're not really talking about the issues that matter to most Americans. We're STILL talking about lapel pins, Rev. Wright, and the Weathermen? Wow. This is ridiculous.

Obama's Rev Wright said GD America and we deserved 9/11, a man that placed bombs in America 40 years ago and recently said he was only sorry he did not do more damage, had a fund raiser for Obama, Obama's church selected racist Louis Farrakhan (a man that says all white people are blue eyed devils) to be their Man of the Year. Is there an awful pattern here? Is Obama as inept at selecting his associates and mentors as Bush was selecting people for important jobs like "heck of a job Brownie"?

cj410,years of oppression may lead some to ask for reparations. Not to debate that point, agree or not, Farrakhan has done more to pull people up than talk about reparations. In fact, he preaches a great deal about responsibility. Responsibility as fathers, as community leaders, and responsibilty to educate one's self. Do you disagree with these concepts, or are you going to focus on one aspect of his beliefs. With all that said, did Obama give the award? Did Obama control the actions of the church? Did Obama ever say he was in support of reparations? If we're going to judge him on his "relationships" let's make sure we judge others as well.

Obama said he disowned Rev Wright. Then the moderator asked for clarification, because Obama did NOT disown Rev Wright. Realizing that he screwed up, Obama stuttered that he disowned the comments. This was not a very good recovery because you don't disown comments.

Each time I listen to one of these debates I hope for some illumination on one of the pressing issues before us. This has to be the worse debate we've had. ABC News has no right to ask a candidate to pledge not to raise taxes. It's ridiculous. I agree w/Obama that we have regressed to politics as usual. Debates should be left to political heavy weights like CNN and MSNBC.

No doubt, Hillary was the slickest participant---certainly glib enough to impress those who tend to be impressed by glibness. Obama finally concluded with the only significant statement of the evening, when he pointed out that policy pronouncements have proved impotent given the climate in Washington, D. C., and will remain so unless the next President can build a much broader coalition for change. Does anyone honestly think Hillary and Bill Clinton can?

I think Obama was extremely angry, which was very understandable. The questions had been rehashed for weeks. Hillary would not let up on attacking Obama. Hillary's said she would not have stayed in a church if the pastor blamed the US for 9/11. The first sermon in my all white church after 9/11 said something similar to what Rev Wright said, although much more indirect. It was in a United Methodist Church, the church Hillary has been a member of her entire life. The same church Bush claimed; however, the church sent him letter before the war telling him not to invade Iraq. They have sent Bush many other letters, including, "United Methodist do not torture." Both pastors were correct, the US had no valid reason to kill innocent people in Iraq and kill our military and other civilians. "Are we in some way responsible for what is happening in Iraq by the way we live our lifestyle? Is it our own desires for oil for our SUVs that caused the war to happen? Is it something about the way we live our life - that we haven't made our own life clean and pure yet that is somehow allowing a tyrant to be in control of people in Iraq because of the natural resources that are there? Tough questions for us, questions that are hard to get a handle on because we want to think we are doing things the right way, because we always want to think we are the good people. "

Do Gibson and Stephanopolous really think the people of PA are so stupid they won't recognize blatant bias when they see it? Talk about being elitist snobs. Maybe GS is looking for another White House position as a reward. There's no way he should have been allowed to moderate and ABC should be ashamed. What a joke. If the people of PA should be bitter about anything it should be about the way the media has been sucked into the Clinton strategy of wasting everyone's time focused on nonsense issues. She can't win on the merits, she admits she's a liar (including first saying Obama wasn't electable then admitting he is) but she knows that if she makes something into a big deal and can get some media suckers to buy into it they'll fall for it hook line and sinker. Maybe the next President and Congress should require media reporters and moderators to take a civics lesson before being allowed to moderate, clearly they have no clue what government means to the people or how to focus on important issues.

What a sorry performance by ABC 'News'. They're going to take a lot of heat for this. This is the man, William Ayers, that the so-called monitors of the debate were discrediting Obama for having a distant association with: "He serves on city charities, was an education aide to Mayor Daley, and is a Distinguished Professor of Education at the University of Illinois – Chicago. His wife, Bernadine Dohrn, is now the director of the Children’s Rights Clinic at Northwestern University Law School and has taught courses at the University of Chicago. She is an important children’s rights advocate in the Chicago area." re: flag-pin "controversy"... *The* most patriotic Americans are those that serve our country: soldiers, policemen, firemen, community volunteers, and yes, even our politicians. I don't need our politicians to wear a uniform to prove to me that they're patriotic. The fact that these men and women run for office shows they're committed to this country more than most of the television 'analysts' (or you and me) Here's what a neighbor of William Ayers says about the man and their neighborhood: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/4/16/231245/285/71/497244

The wife and I had our 2 daughters watching with us, hoping to find where these 2 candidates stand on issues that will give the girls a future to look forward to. Frankly we were shocked at the way this debate is being handled through ABC. We decided to send the girls to bed early. The debate was so hopelessly lacking of issues affecting the real miseries and woes, faced by this nation. The moderators behave like kitchen-sink, cannon-blasting, tabloid buffs. And Senator Clinton continues to show that she is nothing more than a frustrated old gossiper who just loves to keep nagging at the same old kitchen-sink tales. Besides, who cares about Rev. Wright today. Who cares about the weather Underground movement that happened in the 60s when literally all American youths were at rage against the Vietnam war. Besides, Bill Clinton, as recent as 2001, pardon 2 Weather Underground women who were, unlike Bill Ayers, were actually jailed. One evidence revealed by this debate is that Senator Obama was still able to keep his cool and calm despite the attacks from Senator Clinton and the moderators. A quality that an American President is expected to exhibit. It is also does indicate that Senator Obama does reach out to everyone, including sinners and fallen guys. When uniting America, a President is expected to try to reach out to everyone, not some approved and selected groups. Senator Obama has a inborn gift to reach out to everyone. The more people he reaches, the more people will come together to bring the much needed hope and change to America. It would even be better if we have a President who is capable of reaching out to the worst type in our society and inspire them to change for the better. To unite America, an American President has to have the gift to reach out to all. To unite nations, an American President must have the gift to be able to reach out to even the enemies to make them change. Senator Obama has this great gift.

Hillary Clinton definetly appeared more knowledgeable, with specific plans for the economy, Iraq, education, healthcare etc. Obama appeared bored, defensive and never really answered some of the questions put to him. A friendship will home-grown terrorist William Ayers may seem "distracting" to Obama but voters are entitled to know. Obama sluffed over the question just as he did before when questioned about Tony Rezko and Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Perhaps Obama doesn't want us to know who he really is??????

It is very interesting to read the diversity of opinion in this country, yet it amazes me that anyone making less than 200K/yr could vote Republican, unless they are not very well educated/informed (yet many people aren't because our education system in this country sucks and the media sucks even more)it proves that we are living in an Orwellian USA when so many people making less than 200K vote Republican or right wing Democrat like Clinton or Lieberman...when it comes between choosing using our taxes to pay for corporate welfare (3 to 9 trillion for the war, 2 trillion for the investment banks, 2 trillion tax breaks for the rich, 800 billion debt financing.. etc)or choosing social services (200 Billion for health care, 200 billion for education, 10 billion for FDA and EPA oversight...etc) many middle class voters prefer giving their tax dollars to war and the super rich...by voting Republican...or right wing Democrat...I don't get it???? yet that is the case. So should we vote Hillary because if we don't all these idiots will vote McCain if Obama becomes the nominee? NO...its time WE THE PEOPLE who can still think freely accept nothing less than true freedom, justice and prosperity for all ...Republicans and Right wing Dems have killed all three, we may lose the general but we must take that risk , give me freedom or give me death!

By the way I travel a lot in my work, all over the World, in every region in the World; Europe, Africa, Asia, S. America...the whole world wants Obama, except perhaps Israel (they have many lower class Republican types too in that country easily scared and easily manipulated) yet many Israelis want Obama too, perhaps a majority...if the World could vote, Obama would win hands down. The World wants a free and strong America, defending human rights, worker's rights, etc...they are tired of a fascist Bush/Cheney America, they have that already at home in many countries of the World...only by example can we lead, make this world a better place for all...not by invading third world countries, bombing their children and stealing their oil..we have seen once again it doesn't work anyway, terrorism is the new communism, nobody in the World wants either, in America we say we are fighting terrorism/communism but in fact we promote it, because our corporations, especially oil and military, make money off it, the World wants socialism like in Europe, not communism/terrorism...they want the people to have the lion's share of the use natural resources, not corrupt politicians and corporate execs...capitalism is fine but limit it to creativty and innovation, not the use of natural resources which belong to all and should be used wisely...America was great when we defended civil liberties, workers rights and unions, human rights and the enviroment...America sucks when we torture, bomb third world children for oil, don't sign Kyoto and similar agreements...let' make America great again vote Obama and left wing dems in the House and Senate...we can do it Yes we can!

What happened last night was nothing short of a attack on Obama it's bad enough you have Hillary always brining up stuff from the past but now ABC has joined in as well. This to me was like watching FOX News with thoses morons over there acting like they know what's best for the country. None of the question asked for the first 45 min had anything to do with lowering gas prices or helping with crumbling schools systems intercity decade accross the country. Seeing plants close Airlines go under people losing their jobs that's what's important. Rev Wright has nothing to do with whats going on in my hosue hold today. And as far as the Ayers thing goes he was 8 years old when that happened I guess we should start going back into history and start blaming White people for hanging, burning and killing African American people during the 1930,1940,1950,1960,1970 we can go on remember judge not lest he or she be judged by GOD. Everybody has things in their past that we would like to keep there let's not go there people stick to the issues at hand.

I didn't watch, only listened and read transcripts. First, a few days ago I met Cokie Roberts and asked her to moderate, she gratiously declined. The 2 moderators spent 40+ minutes in wedge issues. Non-tabloid journalists such as Ms. Roberts or Margaret Warner for example would have focused on governing philosophy or policy. We need to get the debates off of the commercial networks. As far as the candidates go, I viewed Hillary as taking every opportunity to attack. Obaba stayed away, for example with Bosnia (he only counterpunched once on the "Weathermen" issue). When it got down to substance, they were about even. They both will withdraw from Iraq as soon as possible, they'll have similar proposals on the economy. I have more agreement with Obama on Iran and general governing philosophy, so I wish him to win your state's primary.

To all those that spew hate and divisiveness for apparently no good reason, ask yourselves as a citizen in this country knowing how this war in Iraq is making the country bankrupt, the economy in a shambles and the gap between rich and poor widening more than ever, how can I help my community and my country?. Believe me everyone should consider where we are as a nation and what can we do to make the situation better going forward. No matter how you slice it, we are all in this together. Divided we fail, united we all prosper

Thank you eclectic! Peter Jennings is spinning in his grave. Both "moderators" were a disgrace their trade. Clinton's attack mode showed desparation and will result in further questions about her. She may indeed win PA, but it won't help much in the delegate or, more importantly, the "Superdelegate" count. Obama picked up two in N.C., one in and IN and one in OK yesterday and overnight. It's like a slow "plumbing leak"; drip, drip, drip. Reports are out the David Axelrod, Obama's Campaign Manager, will announce several Clinton supporters switching to Obama. We'll see, but this American has had it with the length and tone of the Democratic Primary. The winner last night was, in reality, John McCain and the GOP got about a million dollars of free advertising for the fall. In a nation of 300 million+ people, is this the best we can do?

This was hands down the inquiring minds want to know debacle. Actually the National Enquirer would do better.

I did not watch the debate because I had already viewed 20 debates and there is nothing more either can talk about than has already been beatened to death; however, from what I see on news today, I am glad that I missed the debate. When will Hillary learn that the people do not like this "Jerry Springer Politics". Obviously, ABC does. They even tried to get Obama to hit back at Hillary about the sniper fire lie and he refused. Now, that is a true leader and grown up. Obama obviously recognizes that the people are concern about their economic welfare and could care less about stuff like 'lapel pins'. He even defend her about the 'stay at home baking cookies' remarks from years ago. He obviously does 'get it' that the voters do not like this kind of politics. The voters expressed this in the 2000 election. The candidates need to talk about themselves and how they will address the voters problems. End of story.

jfnikki, you must copy and paste your post. Is it only's Obama's 13th ward or is it the whole city of Chicago's ward? Is it part of the State of IL? More importantly, it's a neighborhood or ward in the United States. With that said, I hope you're going to Chicago to make a difference in the 13th ward. If not, please post something elese. Where is the link to the Kenneth Starr report? Where are the weapons of mass destruction?

It is so obvious now that Senator Clinton should be the Democratic nominee. Obama has no chance in the general election but besides that Clinton is far more qualified and ready to be Commander in Chief. Her responses to affirmative action and Iran were far superior and give us a glimpse into her administration. It is time to vote smart, vote Clinton.

Obama does not stand a chance against the Republicans. That is why they sent republicans over to vote for him, they know they can tear him apart easily. Sadly The DNC and high power Democrats playing god and political fixers with the election. Plus pressuring the super delegates have backed the wrong candidate. They want a puppet, but he can't win.

Hillary won the debate...it wasn`t even close...BO was constantly on the defensive...rattled, poorly answering questions he should`ve been asked a long time ago...meanwhile, Hillary only answered the questions put to her directly to the pt...and got into far greater detail when talking about her superior plans...including the one to get out of Iraq...endorsed by over 3x as many high-ranking vet/military officials!... the media love affair with BO is dying...they had been been so Pro-BO and anti-Clinton, it`s ridiculous...they should`ve asked these questions a long time ago...if they had, Hillary might`ve won this thing by now...consequently, we know little about this guy...it`s about time someone started asking about his ties to terrorists, etc., and other undesirables he associates with...KUDOS to ABC for being the 1st to do so...but, if you think ABC was tough, just wait to the PUBS get going...everything brought up in the 1st part of the debate will be brought up by the PUBS repeatedly during the summer and fall...and they`ll tear BO apart on these things.
