Cheltenham: An election confessional

Martha Woodall reports

Voters arriving at Glenside Elementary School in Cheltenham Township today were given an opportunity to step into a makeshift booth that Newsweek magazine had erected on the school lawn and be videotaped for an "election confessional" feature that will be posted later today on

Newsweek staff writer Jessica Bennett and video producer Sarah Frank said they had been looking for a key voting district in important Montgomery County in the swing state Pennsylvania and had selected Cheltenham's Precinct 1-1 and 1-2. It was the only site in Pennsylvania that Newsweek targeted. The tiny crew set up outside the school around 9:30 a.m..

After casting their ballots in dual-purpose gymnasium-auditorium of the K-4 elementary school, voters were invited to step inside the Newsweek booth to explain their choices and discuss their concerns. By 11:30 a.m., about 20 voters had taken them up on the offer. Bennett said the majority were Democrats who had voted for Obama, but some Republicans had expounded as well. Cheltenham is a predominantly Democratic community.
