Study finds Philadelphians own more German Shepherds than any other breed of dog

The original Rin Tin Tin. Will Smith's dog in I Am Legend. The pooch from Jim Belushi's 1980s stinker, K-9—all German Shepherds, all great dogs. No wonder they're the most popular breed in Philadelphia these days.

Or so says a recently completed study from the American Kennel Club, which also ranked dog breeds for large cities like Atlanta and New York. The Big Apple seems to love English Bulldogs while cities like Boston and Dallas prefer the gentle embrace of the Labrador Retreiver. Here in Philly, though, we like something a little more authoritative. Plus, they're cute when they're young.

Which, as it turns out, we Philadelphians also love: Retrievers scored just below German Shepherds on the ranked list. So, to recap: Philadelphia, home of mid-sized, long-haired dogs that could just as likely to defend your home as be loved by your children.

The full ranked list is as follows:

1. German Shepherd Dogs

2. Labrador Retrievers

3. Bulldogs

4. Golden Retrievers

5. Yorkshire Terriers

6. Rottweilers

7. Boxers

8. Doberman Pinschers

9. French Bulldogs

10. Alaskan Malamutes

Good work, Philly. But, please, next year, get the Terriers out of there. They're making our German Shepherds restless.
