Top 10 states for lottery jackpots

Pennsylvania and New Jersey have won 36 top prizes in Powerball and Mega Millions.

Florida has won more Powerball jackpots than any state? That's what a quote in a news story said after a ticket sold in Zephyrville, Fla., hit Powerball's $590.5 million jackpot in Saturday night's drawing.

Sorry, Florida. Not even close. Indiana is No. 1 in Powerball with 19 jackpots, followed by 16 for Pennsylvania. Florida? Six. Actually, that's impressive, since Florida joined Powerball just in 2009.

New York, California and New Jersey have had the most major winners, mostly in Mega Millions.

Here are the Top 10 states in total jackpots for Powerball and Mega Millions, including the latest drawings, according to Powerball.US and Mega-Millions.US.

1. New York, 31 jackpots (27 Mega Millions, 4 Powerball), $2.58 billion total jackpots (No. 1 for money).
2. California, 24 jackpots (all Mega Millions), $2.06 billion (4).
3 (tie). New Jersey, 20 jackpots (17 Mega Millions, 3 Powerball), $2.13 billion (2).
3 (tie). Indiana, 20 jackpots (1 Mega Millions, 19 Powerball),  $1.68 billion (5).
5. Ohio, 19 jackpots (17 Mega Millions, 2 Powerball), $2.1 billion (3).
6. Georgia, 17 jackpots (14 Mega Millions, 3 Powerball), $1.52 billion (6).
7 (tie). Pennsylvania, 16 jackpots (all Powerball), $1.32 billion (9).
7 (tie). Michigan, 16 jackpots (14 Mega Millions, 2 Powerball), $1.36 billion (8)
9. Missouri, 15 jackpots (all Powerball), $1.49 billion (7).
10. Minnesota, 13 jackpots (all Powerball), $1.1 billion (11).

Florida had only a half-dozen jackpots, but they were worth $1.15 billion, good enough for No. 10 in total jackpot money.

Delaware has won 5 Powerball jackpots worth $442 million.
