The top words, phrases and names of 2013

There's a lot of failure leading a language group's rankings of the top words of 2013.

Every year, the Global Language Monitor lists the top words, phrases and names of the year, providing a snapshot of what's sparking conversation in the English-speaking world. The group's rankings are based on worldwide usage on the Internet, print and electronic media, blogs and social media.

The top word for 2013 was "404" -- the Internet code for failure, frequently used when a website doesn't load. And following in second place? "Fail."

The organization attributed those findings to political failures ranging from the maligned launch of HealthCare.gov to political gridlock to National Security Agency spy controversies.

Locally, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie makes an appearance at the number eight spot on the "top names" list.
