#PhillyFive Developing Stories: June 1, 2015

Your early look at the day's developing stories.

Here's your look at five stories we're following today:

1. Rescue sought for iconic South Philly mural: A plan to save a crumbling mural that highlights South Philly's music and film stars is being developed. The portraits of Bobby Rydel, Frankie Avalon, Chubby Checker, Fabian, Eddie Fisher, Al Martino and Jerry Blavat near Pat's King of Steaks at 9th and Passyunk was slated to be whitewashed this spring. But now, there's a rush to find funds and a new space for the mural.

2. Authority for NSA data collection program expires: Key parts of the Patriot Act have temporarily expired, as the Senate failed to pass legislation extending the National Security Agency's legal authority to collect phone records and other data before midnight. Legislators have voted to advance legislation to reform the records-collection program disclosed in leaks by Edward Snowden.

3. Pa. lawmakers return to work: Pennsylvania legislators are back in session today, with a month left of the state's fiscal year. Several hotly contested issues are on tap for the next month, including public-employee pensions, a natural gas severance task and budget legislation.

4. Feds pursuing armored car bandits: Federal investigators are searching for the masked men who are believed to be behind several armored-car heists in the city in recent years, making off with hauls as reported to be as large as $300,000. While bank robbers are generally nabbed quickly, bandits who target armored cars are often more organized and harder to catch.

5. Heavy rain moving through Philadelphia: The Philadelphia region is seeing its first significant rain storm in more than a month. Flood watches and advisories are in effect throughout the area today.
