5 stories to follow: Sept. 11

Here's your daily look at five stories to know about today.

1. 9/11 anniversary: Nationwide and locally, a number of tributes today will mark the anniversary Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. In western Pennsylvania, an observance and bell-ringing ceremony will honor the victims of the United Flight 93 crash. A groundbreaking for a visitor center at the crash site, expected to open in 2015, took place earlier this week.

2. Wall St. leaders living large: Five years after the 2008 financial meltdown, a Center for Public Integrity investigation finds that former Wall Street leaders are living large in the post-crisis world. The center examined the current lives of five former bankers and found them living in quiet luxury, and not expected to face any criminal charges.

3. Philly schools: Philadelphia students are back in class this week as talks continue about how to fund the schools. Superintendent William Hite visited several schools Tuesday to see the effects of the budget crisis and Mayor Nutter's schedule says he is slated to make an education announcement this morning. Meanwhile, the state announced that the number of violent incidents in Philly schools is declining.

4. Hot weather: The temperature is expected to hit 92 degrees in Philly today -- which would be 12 degrees above normal and the city's first 90-plus day since July 21.

5. Miss America: Tonight is the second night of preliminaries in the Miss America pageant, which is back in Atlantic City after a six-year run in Las Vegas.
