5 stories to follow: Oct. 1

Here's your quick look at five stories to know about today:

1. Federal government shuts down: Leaders in Washington failed to reach a plan to fund federal agencies Monday, and the federal government shut down at 12:01 a.m. today. 2. Health exchanges: The federally run health exchanges that are a key part of President Obama's 2010 signature health care law open today. Philly.com has complete coverage of the exchanges.

3. School breakfast: A report being released today says more needy children are getting breakfast at school. 4. Summer weather: It's the first day of October, but the weather will feel more like summer. The National Weather Service expects today to be the first of five days with high temperatures in the 80s.

5. Terminal F renovations: A slate of new restaurants and shops open to the public today at Philadelphia International Airport's Terminal F.
