Wayns decides to stay in NBA draft
As most people assumed last week when Villanova's Maalik Wayns talked about putting his name into the NBA draft, it appears that the junior lead guard from Roman Catholic is indeed not coming back for his final season of eligibility.
Wayns — a second-team all-Big East selection and the Wildcats' top scorer — tweeted today, “I loved my 3 years at Villanova and will never regret anything had the best teammates coaches and professors anybody could ask for ... I will always be a Wildcat and to the Nova fans who disagree with my dec sorry it's best for me and my fam i love all the fans and also ... The haters just gone provem em wrong once it's time to pursue my dream let's get it!!!"
Wayns has until April 10 to remove his name from consideration.
There was a report today that Wayns - who averaged over 17 points a game for a team that finished 13-18 and missed the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2004 - had either signed or was about to sign with North Jersey-based agent Andy Miller, who also represents Kyle Lowry, the last Wildcat to leave early (2006).
A spokesperson at Miller's office said he believed "nothing official" is in place.
I don't even think he is going to be drafted. Wayns was not better than Scottie Reynolds OR Corey Fisher. He is more of a scorer than a point guard and all three years he tended to play erratically.
I am irritated by this but I'm not sure it's going to negatively impact Nova next season. Ty Johnson showed a lot of promise at PG this season when Wayns was hurt. Cheek and Pinkston should be able to pick up the points they lose with Wayns's departure. NovaNation11
nobody assumed that dude. last week the reports said no agent and most assumed he WOULD return. incorrect. drumminge6
Wayns probably charges better than anyone in the NBA. He could be the best at that stat. At least for a week or two, after which he would be sent down. 2smart4philly
this agent is stealing money from Wayns telling him he is the next Lowry.... Wayns is nowhere near as prepared for the NBA PG position as Scottie or Lowry was (not that Lowry really was either). he'll be lucky to go 2nd round.

Wish the young man well but I fear he won't even be drafted. Late 2nd round is nothing to write home about. JBinPA
Best of luck Maalik. I can see him in the Association. Carpe Diem
Another delusional young man who listens to his friends and hangers-on instead of taking a hard honest look at what his chances are. I don't think he has developed enough to have a chance at the NBA. But, it is his life and he can do what he wants with it. sanityinlaw

Maalik, I understand you leaving due to your draft stock continuing to be to be damaged by the bad situation at Nova created by the horrible coaching but I think you will struggle to compete in the NBA due to lack of size, a mediocre shot and average athleticism. Best thing you have going for you is your speed but anyone who thinks Maalik is Lowry who took along time to develop but is a much better distributor, shooter and can finish at the rim despite what looks like a thick body. Nova will be terrible next year without him unless cheek, bell and Yarou picj up their games 100%. Pinkston came on nice but he is 6-5 and trying to play inside as Nova has no other options. He needs to be on the wing. I hope the 2 recruits can play. Ty Johnson did play better at the end but got away with about 100 offensive fouls as Bilas and others pointed out halllee
