Sporting sneakers, supporting cancer research

This weekend, around the country, you will see a strange occurrence. Well-dressed college basketball coaches wearing sneakers on the sidelines with their suits. It is the Coaches vs. Cancer "Suits and Sneakers Awareness Weekend". It is also “look foolish weekend” for all coaches and we are glad to do it for this worthy cause.

This is an opportunity to bring attention to Coaches Vs. Cancer as a program, and to make everyone aware about the ravages of this disease. It was brought to light this past weekend with the death of North Carolina State's Kay Yow, one of the great basketball coaches in the country. Unfortunately her untimely death brings our cause even more to the forefront.

Hopefully we are all learning that we can do more to fight this killer. This is all that we are trying to do with this initiative. As much as we think we are doing, now is the time for us to step up and do even more.

Philadelphia is the leading fundraiser in the country for Coaches Vs. Cancer and we should be because we are Philadelphia and we have great care and concern for our fellow human beings.

Please support our cause, and now when you see me and my coaching staff on the sidelines Saturday at the Liacouras Center against Richmond I hope you will remember the reason why we are proudly wearing sneakers.

Go Owls.
