'Nova's Stokes named Big 5 player of week

Villanova senior guard Corey Stokes was named Big 5 Player of the Week. Stokes averaged 23.5 points in victories over Temple and Rutgers. He scored 24 points as the Wildcats defeated Temple, 78-74, and swept the City Series.

On the men's honor roll are:

* La Salle senior forward Jerrell Wiliams, who set a career high for a second consecutive game by scoring 32 points in a 93-90 overtime loss to Towson. Williams also earned his fifth double-double of the season with 13 rebounds.

* Temple senior forward Lavoy Allen, who had 22 points and five rebounds against Villanova.

* Saint Joseph's freshman forward CJ Aiken, who averaged 8.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.5 blocks as the Hawks went 2-0.

Saint Joseph's junior guard Katie Kuester was named Big 5 Women's Player of the Week award. Kuester averaged 18.7 points per game, shot 53.3 percent from the field (16-of-30) and connected on 54.2 percent from behind the arc (13-of-24). Kuester was named tournament MVP as Saint Joseph's won the Hawk Classic.

On the women's honor roll are:

* Temple junior guard Satoria Bell, who scored 16 points in a loss at No. 3-ranked Duke. Bell scored a season-high 22 points in the Owls win over Akron.

* La Salle senior guard Ashley Gale, who scored a career-high 31 points at Lehigh.

* Villanova junior forward Lindsay Kimmel, who led the Wildcats to a 2-0 week by averaging 16 points and being named to the all-tournament team at the Fordham Holiday Classic.

La Salle's Tyreek Duren (Ss. Neumann-Goretti High) was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for the third time this season. Duren averaged 18.5 points and five assists in two games last week.

Villanova (12-1) moved up one spot, to seventh, in the Associated Press Top 25 poll released today.

Temple, which was 25th last week in the poll after a four-week absence, dropped out of the Top 25 after losing to Villanova, 78-74, last week. The Owls are the third team outside of the Top 25 to receive votes. Duke remains the unanimous No. 1 team. The Big East has four of the top eight teams.
