'Nova gets commitment from top NYC player

POSTED: Thursday, December 3, 2009, 2:59 PM

Villanova’s basketball program has landed another prized recruit for next year’s class.

Today, the Wildcats received a verbal commitment from 6-6, 235-pound power forward Jayvaughn Pinkston, who averaged 23 points and 10 rebounds last season for Bishop Loughlin High in Brooklyn. Many consider him to be the best prospect coming out of New York.

As of 2 weeks ago, he was supposedly headed to Tennessee, but changed his mind when another New Yorker who plays that position, Tobias Harris, signed with the Volunteers. Other schools that had offered him a scholarship were Marquette, St. John’s and Seton Hall. He can’t officially sign until April, which means Villanova isn’t allowed to comment until then.

The Wildcats already have signed James Bell, a shooting guard/small forward from Florida, and Markus Kennedy, a 6-10 center from the Philadelphia area who is spending this season at a prep school in Massachusetts.

How can I root for Nova... they're not even in Philly. (And I grew up in Radnor, and still don't root for them)

hrlevine- in the words of Keyshawn Johnson, coverboy for crybaby illustrated: "CMMMMMON MAN!" -dude I'm a Temple student myself, and while I love our basketball & football teams, I know well enough to know when a college basketball team, or any philly team for that matter, is top 5 material or top 25 material..Temple is a good basketball team. When they play to their potential, they are good enough to be in the top 25 on a consistent basis. And although Georgetown isn't currently as talented as they were when Ewing and even Iverson were there, they are consistently a top 25 team every year who Temple would have beaten by double digits if the Owls would have doubled their 1st half FG% from that game (somewhere around 20%). All I'm saying is, act like your from Philly, act like your an EDUCATED Temple grad, use some lowercase letters like your professors taught you, and give every team from the Philly area the respect they deserve. I'm smart enough to know that if Temple were to crack a powerhouse recruit like Villanova just did, and if the Owls were to crack the top 5 or even top 10, they would get the attention they deserve. Not to mention the fact that I have seen Mike Kern give Temple Basketball, and especially Temple Football this past season, at least a half dozen columns. Get behind all the philly sport teams, or do us all a favor and get behind Bill Cosby if you know what I mean.

Hey Leron, Reggie Redding and Makik Wayns are both Philly kids - went to the Prep and Roman. The coach is from the Philly burbs. Half of the rest of the roster went to high school in Jersey. Also - why the hate on Jay Wright? He's the one thing even Villanova-haters can like. Good guy, great coach.

None of the players are from around here? redding and wayns are from phila. cheek and stokes are from nj. How can you root for Nova? either have gone there, have an association with the school, or grew up a basketball fan and like to watch quality basketball (vs watching the sixers, sju(pa), lasalle, Upenn, drexel).

It's obvious that Temple, St. Joes and other Philly hoop fans will never stop hating Villanova and continue to say things that make zero sense. Saying Jay Wright only wants to be good? In his eight years he has reached the sweet 16 four times, the elite 8 twice and the final four once - each time losing to the eventual champ. Calling Jay Wright classless? I guarantee that none of the Big 5 coaches would describe him that way. Saying not to root for 'Nova because none of the players are from around here? Where are Reggie Redding and Malik Waynes from? Plus, last I looked, none of Big 6 schools had an all Philly roster.

Leron, Maalik Wayns went to Roman and Reggie Redding went to St. Joe's Prep. Markus Kennedy, a recruit for next year, is from Wyndmoor. Nova put the press on Rakeem Christmas but the love wasn't mutual. Jay wanted Wayne Ellington and Gerald Henderson but they went elsewhere, too. Can't get everybody but if there is a local kid with the talent to play in the Big East then you can bet Jay Wright wants him!
