Villanova’s basketball program has received its first verbal commitment for the Class of 2013.
Kris Jenkins, a 6-5, 250-pound power forward from Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C., broke the news Sunday afternoon on a radio show down there.
He didn’t play much in this summer’s AAU circuit after suffering a broken pinky finger, after averaging almost 20 points and 18 rebounds last season. He’s rated the 63rd-best player in the country by Rivals.com and the 18th best at his position by Scout.com.
The other finalists were Rutgers, Miami, Clemson and Xavier.
The Wildcats, coming off a 13-19 season, already had added a player for 2013-14 in guard Dylan Ennis, who transferred from Rice and will have three seasons of eligibility remaining.
According to Norm Eavenson, a Scouting Associate for Bob Gibbons All Star Sports, Jenkins is “Nimble, competitive and bullish. Gradually pushing his game further from the basket, regularly knocking down \[three-point shots\] off the catch. He bumps and grinds for rebounds, has good hands and finishes through contact. Growth, conditioning and ball handling will determine his college position.”
On Zagsblog, Jenkins said he chose the Main Line because of coach Jay Wright and his staff.
“They just gave me a vision, a plan for me that was something I just couldn’t turn down,” he explained. “Just the opportunity to get better.”
He said his recovery is going “good” and he’s looking forward to trying to play again around mid-September.
Gonzaga coach Steve Turner offered this on Zagsblog: “With his skill set and basketball IQ, he has the ability to play a couple of positions. His ability to shoot the ball will be a huge asset along with his ability to play with his back to the basket. He is what I call a point forward because he has a great knack for finding guys and making the right pass. He’s a guy you can play through.”
