Explorers' Guillandeaux granted extra year of eligibility

La Salle senior Ruben Guillandeaux has been granted a medical hardship from the Atlantic 10 Conference and will play next season for the Explorers.

Guillandeaux played in the first four games of the 2009-10 season before suffering a stress fracture in his right foot.

"We are thrilled that Ruben will be given a full year to compete in 2010-11," Explorers coach John Giannini said in a statement. "He will be one of four guards that did not play for us last season along with Earl Pettis, Tyreek Duren and Sam Mills. This is potentially the deepest and most talented group of guards that we have had recently."

The Brooklyn, N.Y. native, who attended St. Patrick's High in North Jersey, averaged 9.5 points per game and shot 62 percent from three-point range. He has 776 career points. The Explorers were 12-18 last season and 4-12 in the Atlantic 10.

"Having Ruben's experience and talent will anchor this group early on as we begin the season with great optimism," Giannini said. "I expect Ruben will have his best season to date and enjoy a special senior year."
